LOL. You are absolutely right!
The g238 doesn't seem to show an adavantage over the NV3500. Other than maybe smoother gear transition. Even with the extra 6th gear, the NV3500 has a taller final gear. LOL. Amaizing!!
Lesson learned. Just because its a 6 speed, doesn't mean that it its better and faster than the 5 speed.
Not only that but the 5 speed has a bit more aftermarket support than the 6 speed.

I might be wrong about this but I read that its easy and almost a bolt on affair to switch from the NV3500 to the NV4500.
I think 4th and fith are the same ratio in the NV4500 and NV3500.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't go through the trouble to swap to the getrag. I believe the NV is rated for more torque also.

It almost makes me what to swap from the g238 to the Nv4500. Granny first gear and taller 5th gear than the g238 6th gear. Heck even a NV5600.
I believe that those 3 NV trannies have the same 5 gear ratio of 0.73.
The G238 and the g56 have the same 5th and 6th gear ratio of 0.79. Ugh, what gives!!??
In that case, dodge should have just installed the g56 in all the 2005-2008 1500 4.7L.

There were 2 g56 transmissions I think.
1st-6.29, 2nd-3.48, 3rd-2.10, 4th-1.38, 5th-1.00, 6th-0.79, R-5.74.
1st-5.94, 2nd-3.28, 3rd-1.98, 4th-1.31, 5th-1.00, 6th-0.74, R-5.42.

As you can see. Even the torquiest g56 has the same 5th and 6th gear rations as the g238. Honestly, this really sucks!! The g238 is weaker, less torque and slower than the second g56 with the 1st gear of 5.94 and 5th gear of 0.74.

Hmm.. I wonder. Is it possible to swap transmissions from the g238 to one of the g56 or even one of the NV transmissions. NV4500 or NV5600???
I believe that it could be easier for a 2002-2004 rams since they have the NV3500 already. But what about the 2005-2008 that have the g238??

Thanks for posting that, it explains a lot about the behavior of my Ram 1500. First is like the old "granny low" an fifth is an "overdrive gear."

Going from first to 2nd is a huge difference. All of it is kind of exaggerated by the 3:92s and 20s.

^yeah that's a fairly good set of ratio spread. It'd be nice to have a real granny gear of like 5.00, then a real first of more like 3.5 or so. You could use first(3.5) in normal driving instead of the granny gear and it'd be an easier transition.

If only I could design my own ratios.....aren't there companies that build transmission to your liking...?

I love my transmission, no complaints on it really, but it only has 29k on it.

I think mine would behave a lot better with the 17s, or at least a shorter tire.
The 20s look cool, but the 275/60/20s are 33 inches tall, and an inch or two less would make a lot of difference without sacrificing too much at hi speed IMO.

As far as I know the Cummins powered Ram is the only manual trans available in a full size pick-up today.

Yes it is. And I hope that dodge doesn't make the mystake of dropping the manual and going all auto. I still want to get a new cummins with a manual transmisison in the far future.

My perfect transmission would be the G56 with the 6.29 1st gear ratio and the 0.73 6th gear ratio.
And of course, it would need to bolt on to my 4.7L with little to no issues.
Or if there was a shop out there that does custom heavy duty gears for the g238 and other transmissions and that they offer different gear ratios to meet the demands of picky customers. LOL..

By the way, does anybody here know or heard of some company that does just that? Custom gearing for these transmisisons?
If someone does know or heard of, could you please post their information and more about them?

Thanks.
