I'll chime in my experience. I live 2.2 miles from work all city drive truck is parked in heated garage and i start and go. When i leave work i start it 10 min prior. In eco mode i got 12.8-13 for a week. The next week i made sure to disable mds and observed 11.3-11.5. I have done this test numerous times each time resetting the evic. Just what i have observed.

I get better milage leaving all 8 cylinders running normal.
4wd- long bed.
I've got the large gas tank, so If I run it till it's low I get a very accurate average of the mileage. My normal driving is from 40-55 mph, with maybe a small amount of city.
I've now run 4 complete test tanks of gas. 2 letting the "eco-mode" and MDS run as it wants, and 2 full tanks pressing the "-" to set "6" before each trip.
I also alternated eco, normal eco, normal, so that seasonal gas formulas, and weather were not factors.
I started the tests after 3k miles
full tank #1 MDS ---------------16.2 mpg
full tank #2 disabled "eco-mode" 17.5 mpg
full tank #3 MDS ---------------16.8 mpg
full tank #4 disabled "eco-mode" 18.0 mpg
full tank #5 MDS ---------------14.6 mpg one day with snow/slush
full tank #6 disabled "eco-mode" 15.5 mpg two days with snow

I drove the first MDS tank with the display visible, and the 3rd tank with it hidden, so it didn't influence my driving.

Updated tank 6
There seems to be is a real problem with my "eco-mode" and the MDS. I always burn more fuel in 4 cylinder mode.

Probably a stupid question but do the 4.7s have MDS? I don't think they do. Just curious.

Also will I get better torque response if I am driving around town and I leave the ERS in 5th or 6th?

It does disable it as long as you are not in drive. So if you mean it does not permanently you are right, but in order for the mds to work the transmission must be in drive. It will not work in any other position as per owners manual. also if you put it into 6 gear you get all the slipping in and out of different gears but if in 5 gear it will give you full power and and stiff shifts.

It must be in drive before it will work.
