Default Can a 2009 ram 2500 slt with tow package tow this?

I just signed up so hello. I am looking at a 2009 Ram 2500 SLT Hemi with the tow package. I have a 26' travel trailer that weighs 6300lbs dry and an 18.5' boat that weighs 3700lbs loaded. Here in Saskatchewan it is legal to pull trains and that is what I would like to do. The roads here are mostly flat and the longest trip would only be about 4-5 hours each way and I would only pull this combo 4-5 times a year. In your opinion will the gas 2500 I am looking at be able to handle the 11000lb load or should I look at a diesel? Thanks for your time.

I would say this is way to much for 2500 gasser to tow....Reason being is you always want to go with the GVW not the dry weight of the travel trailer....The GVW of that trailer is probaby upwards of 8500LBS(check out your trailer for real #'s) Plus the weight of the boat, i would say your are way over your tow capacity...Are there not restrictions for how long the tow vehicle and trailer(s) can be ? I would say you would definately want a diesel for this job!

I am just guessing, but i think your only 500 pounds over weight by 2009 standards

but, in 2010 the exact same Ram, jumped way up, they started measuring the standards a different way

use this chart & use the 2010 standards, the body was identical, so was the frame & suspension
http://www.rambodybuilder.com/yearold.pdf

the 2009 through 2012 is the same, maybe 30 pounds difference in total weight

I dont know about the train pulling issue but i can tell you that my 2010 2500 HD CC hemi would tow a 33 foot tagalong ( with proper weight distribution hitch) all day long and it was over 11000 lbs wet.

It'll pull it just fine.

Legally I don't know, however lots of the 3/4 ton diesels pulling big 5th wheels are over their gcwr, and way over on gvwr and no one bothers them

Thanks for the replies. In Saskatchewan you can pull 2 trailers aslong as the lead trailer is a 5th wheel OR has at least two axels. The total length cannot excede 75 feet including truck. I will never pull with the trailer full of water so I don't think I will ever fully weigh down the trailer and will always use equalizer hitch. I would love a diesel, but for the 4 times a year I will need it is justified? I will be using this truck everyday for everything. Thanks again.

Gas or diesel doesn't make a huge difference on tow capacity. It has more to do with gearing, and if its a 1 ton or 3/4 ton. Something to look for would be a single rear wheel one ton. That would for sure get the job done.

if the weight is over the max as per sticker, if you get weighed you will get a ticket, if you have accident, your ins. might not pay as you would be considered overloaded. might want to start looking at 3500s.

I think I would not worry about the weight if your in an accident since you plan to be inside the legal guidelines, they would have to pick up all the peices and weigh them all, and I am guessing if you crash that set up its not gonna be pretty anyway... Your insurance company there knows the laws, they know you can train trailers, guessing they would have to pay as long as your within the legal guidelines and your truck is equipped to handle it. Just my .02 cents
