Default Should the 5.2 V8 be this bad on gas?

Hi everyone, I bought a nice 2000 Ram 1500 4x4 Sport extended cab short box. It has 212000km on it, very clean inside and out and runs great, I think. Has the factory towing package. I haven't driven a 5.2 powered ram before so during the test drive I thought the power felt about right for what the engine is rated at. I know the truck has slightly oversize tires, but after driving it for the past week and taking a long trip on mostly highways, the fuel consumption seems dismal at best and I was surprised at how hard it was on the truck to climb some hills and even just push a good wind. At 90km/h (about 55mph) it seems to have quite a hard time keeping the torque converter locked to keep the RPM's down, even slight hills require enough throttle to reach the unlocking point.

Also, when I say dismal fuel mileage, I mean averaging 13mpg with 90% highway driving. I never imagined the truck would do that badly and it is starting to make me think something is not right. I know the truck has the Volant CAI and Dynomax 3" cat-back exhaust. I realize this truck does not have great aerodynamics, so I was expecting miracles with the fuel mileage, in fact I would be happy with about 18mpg, which is what I have been told this truck should get with the 4x4. A few people I know actually have gotten as high as 20 with their 2wd's. So, the question is, realistically, what should I expect to get out of this truck for fuel mileage and overall power output, since its starting to seem low on both counts. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds about right. My buddy has a 98 5.2 RCLWB 4x4 sees 14.1 max. My dakota 5.2 2wd 5 speed is around 16 so I'd say youre on point at 13

Well what the hell did dodge do to this engine for it to only make 230hp and get such horrible gas mileage, even in a small truck (quoting your dakota)? Seems a little fishy to me as even the 07 Ram quad cab 4x4 hemi my dad owned managed to get almost 11mpg towing 7000lbs and this 2000 Ram with the 318 manages a best of only 2mpg better without a load? Something seems wrong with that. Of course if this is in fact the case with this truck, then I will live with it as I love the truck. Just starting to think I was wrong about staying away from the 360 since everyone I talked to swore it was worse than the 318 in the same truck at 15mpg average.

With the 4x4 13 is about right with auto trans. The milage rateing isn't based on real world use its a formula based on weght class, motor size cam and use. Now on to real world. I have a 01 two wheel 5.2 five speed. Real world for me is 15 to high 17 bone stock with 146, on the clock. For the extra weight and kanetic loss in drive train your doing good.

I'd be happy with 13 if I could get it. Mines a 5spd manual trans, 5.2, short wheel base. And I get around 11.

The only way I get any better is drafting behind 18 wheelers.

Yeh, I get 12 if I'm lucky with the 360 and 4x4. I had a 98 1500 318 but it was 2x4, got about 17mpg on the highway until I switched to Royal Purple which was good for another 2mpg. And what is 'slightly oversized tires?'

My 97 4x4 5.2 got around 14/15 mixed. On a trip to atlanta on flat ground we actually saw 18mpg.. we had the 3.55 in that truck.. made the truck a pig even with all the mods.. headders, cam, intake...

Oversize tires are 285/75R16, not huge, but equivalent to a 33" tall tire I think, stockers are about 31.5" so its not a huge difference but throws off the speedo by about 5km/h at 100.

Yeh, that's not enough to make that much of a difference. I saw an increase in mileage when I went from the 235s on my old 98 to 265s but kinda comparing apples to pineapples since it was 2wd.
First thing I'd do is a complete tune up and make sure everything is up to snuff. If it has dino oil in it, I'd strongly recommend moving to a good synthetic. Lube all the running gear, check your tire pressure, etc. I saw a 2mpg increase just going from regular oil to synthetic. I've used Mobil 1 and Royal Purple with good results in several vehicles. I could light 'em up at will after that. Seriously. Yes, with a 318.
