I was going to ask that, but then he went and said that the PO replaced the rear with one out of a 2500 and I got to thinking that he'd have to either carry two spares, or the rear was not replaced out of a 2500, since they have 8 lugs. The Van had a 5 lug option but the rears are in no way compatible.

As a matter of fact, no I don't have 8-lug wheels. Didn't even think of that. Great. The plot sickens. Work has had me right out straight and I haven't had a chance to slip under it to check the tag either. This weekend I'll take the front end apart and get pics of the hubs and as much other stuff as I can.

By the time I get 4x4 working...there won't be any more snow coming. I guess I'll have to play in the mud instead

The other thing to check is the casting on the Differential tab. Should be the part that's triangle shaped and horizontal to the ground.
Didn't see any casting number but it's pretty crusty so I might have missed it. I did find numbers stamped in the diff cover but not sure if those are pn#s for the cover or the unit.

The axle you're showing me looks like it's out of a '94/'95. Check the production date on your truck.
6/96

Quote:
I have a feeling it was made in '95 for '96. If the yolk is 3 1/4 wide (picture is hard to tell) call the parts store and have them look it up for a '95...then cross check the part number with the one you have.
BINGO! 3 1/4 yoke, 1.5" shaft.

That's where the problem is. Guaranteed. If I turn out to be right, you can thank me by giving me a reputation point. Upper right hand of this post and looks like a justice scale. I will be checking back because I know I'm right.
Done

UPDATE!! I had a thought and just went outside... Guess what? My spare axle, you guessed it, it's exactly like the one with the larger splines you have pictured. And I have a '95.

NICE! Thank you!

P.S. Nice shoes

Thank you, thank you...don't applause, just throw money.
Thanks for checking your axle...and as for the shoes, my lady HATES them...

...which is why I keep them

Actually, I shouldn't piss her off, she's my paint and body person.

Glad to help a fellow Ram owner. 6/96 is the cutoff so it could have gone either way on that. Remember it for the brakes/calipers.

Ironic you mention that. I'm planning on doing the brakes while I'm at it as well as ball joints, u-joints and control arms. Since the calipers are going to be a core item anyway, I'll bring them with me when I go to get the new ones and check 'em before I leave.

Just did the control arms on my son's '99 GC, at least on the Ram there's more room to work. The driver's side lower is bent in the middle about an inch, someone hit a rock HARD.

My 97 uses the large 15 spline axle.

Ok, trying REAL HARD not to be a PIA but I don't want to waste any more money if possible. All my FLAPS have these (94/95) which look just like the parts I already have, especially the outer stub...which doesn't look like the outer stub that is currently on the truck and AFAIK will not fit into my hub.

My outer stub looks like this:

I found this on ebay for $135 but it's for a 2500 yet it LOOKS like it's right, doesn't mean it IS right I know, but the stub is correct-looking.

Further research tells me the spline count on the left is different than the right because of the intermediate shaft so looking for a 15-spline for the left was a fools errand, should be 29? The one above off ebay has the right spline count too. I'd rather spend the $135 instead of the $339-559 if I can. As mentioned prior, I don't have the left except for the broken outer stub so I'm kinda gunshy. Since I mentioned it earlier in the thread, here's the pic of the diff cover, not sure if it tells us anything or not.

Oh, and the trailing arm...

New one on the way along with about 20 other items from Rock Auto. Have to say they ship FAST.
