Default engine oil for rebuild break in

I'm having my engine rebuilt this week (or two), and my mechanic asked me what oil he wants me to put in. I don't think I will be able to find any "break in oil" here.

I know not to put any synthetic oil in for a while, but what is the best weight to use for breaking in? This is in a very warm climate, if that matters.

Also, I've read arguments that hard break ins (heavy accelleration) techniques are better than the old school slow break ins. Any thoughts on this?

Not sure if it matters, engine will be .030 over, valve job, kegger mod, intake mod, new 180 therm., new coil plugs and wires, with the aluminum plenum fix of course.

Thanks for the input.

15w40 diesel or gas oil. The diesel oil has a lot of zinc & better additives which will help everything seat together during break in. After 500 to 1000 miles drain the oil. I wouldn't run it hard till everything seats together. Also most autoparts stores sell break in oil additive if you want to go that route.

Everyone has their way to do this, I use the same weight oil I will use normally, but I do use conventional. I buy cheap oil, then crank it up and let it get pretty hot, nearly operating temp, shut it down and change the oil. Let it fully cool. Then crank it up again with the fresh(conventional) oil and break it in by varying rpm's a lot, do not hold steady rpm's for long durations. You don't want to beat the hell out of it, but don't baby it also. Try to hit every spectrum of driving style for say 500-1,000 miles. Maybe hit the interstate and vary fro m55-80mph often, varying acceleration rates. Pull off every so many exits, etc.

Then I change the oil again to synthetic because that's what I prefer.

The last motor I broke in I used an additive from the local machine shop. He gave me some Lucas Additive and just used normal oil. In a flat tappet motor you run the motor at 2k RPM for 20 minutes or so to break in the cam and lifters. But a roller motor is a plug and play cam. If it was me I would run the motor for 30 minutes with some break in additive and conventional oil. Then change the oil as to get out any crap that always seems to accumulate in a fresh motor. Then run it for 1k miles and fresh oil again. Oil is cheap and best to error on the side of good. Dont forget to change the filter each time you change the oil. Here is a link for some excellent additive...Good luck!
