Default And to think it was driven to my house like this

So I started working on my '96 today after a few weeks of gathering parts and sorting out what I have for an axle. Anyway, so I decide I'm going to start on the driver's side cuz that is the side without an axle shaft at all. So I pull the tools together, grab new caliper, pads, ball joints, axle shaft, get the jackstands and lift it up. As I'm sliding the stand under the front end I notice the tire is still on the ground even though I've jacked it up a couple of inches. Must have not tightened down the jack valve enough so I check that...nope. Tight. I give it another pump and watch the axle go up...but the tire drops down. WTF? Then I notice this....

...and this.

The PO DROVE this truck to me when he delivered it, over 60 miles. He's lucky. VERY lucky.

And this is what happened when I pulled the tire off.

The weight of the truck was the only thing keeping this wheel from parting company.

You are right, someone was very lucky
talk about a vehicle that would have the famous death wobble

I notice the brake pad looks like it has plenty of meat on it

Funny how they will stay together with that type of ball joint/spindle design.... the weight of the vehicle keeps it together.

I like to think of it as a little extra suspension travel...

What a PIA it was to fix that mess. Since the joints complete separated, couldn't do the usual method of a pickle fork to pull them out of the knuckle. Thankfully I had popped the $160 for the 'deluxe' ball joint press and was able to press them out with that after taking a cutoff wheel to them since the nuts were fused to the knuckle too. New ball joints on both sides now, 4 new control arms, softlines, calipers, rod ends. New axle shaft on the left (yes, I have one that fits finally) and new axle joint on the right. New rear u-joint but driving around today I realized I should have done the front one while I had the drive shaft out as I still have a clunk. Duh. The front diff was completely dry so filled that and took it out in the woods a bit this afternoon to check out the 4x4, works great. Next, is rear brakes and gas tank straps. Right now the gas tank is held up by two ratchet straps...
