Default Instant MPG and MDS weird reading

I have just bought and installed an ultra gauge OBD II gauge monitor. When i use the auto stick and turn off the mds i seem to get much better mpg then when i have the mds kick in. When the mds kicks in and i get the loud drone in the exhaust the mpg will drop from around 25 mpg to 10-13 mpg. I had a scangauge II before and it did the same thing. I thought that it was just something weird with the SG 2. I have the St Ram so i don't have the factory EVIC. My DTE and fuel level reading on the ultra gauge is very accurate and the hand calculated mpg is pretty close as well. So is it really that more fuel efficient without the mds on?? I am starting to think that the add on OBD gauges can't handle the MDS. It seems very strange to me that i would get so much better mpg in 8 cyl mode. The truck feels much better without the mds. I just wish there was a tuner for the 2011 rams to disable the mds completely. Other thing i was thinking was that an aftermarket exhaust has a weird effect on the mds system

A few have claimed to get better mpg with mds off but twice the fuel consumption difference? Something seems amiss. Drive a few hundred miles with it on, refuel, and then with it off and see if there's truly that much difference.

Any reason for a road trip is good enough for me.

i figured out the issue. The aftermarket gauges monitor mpg by the MAP sensor. It has some problem with the mds. If you set the engine size to half the 5.7 it reads fine when its in mds mode but screwy when its in 8 cyl and vice versa. So using any of the aftermarket stuff will not work for instant mpg. i have set the engine size to 4.3 L hoping that will even out the average mpg but only time will tell. Im not too sure how the stock evic measures mpg. If these trucks used the MAf sensor it probably wouldn't matter if it were in 8 or 4 cyl.

I have a Scanguage. Scanguage says MPG will not work correctly on a MDS engine.
