lots of other members have given you great advice, When I go back to northern Manitoba for work, I am driving, I usually try to drive 10-12 hours per day max or drive to where there is a decent town to stay in, google map it, see what 10 hours gets you on google maps, I say 10 because google maps doesnt count on traffic, detours, stopping etc. doesnt hurt to google each town and find where the most convenitent hotel is so you dont have to drive all over hells half acre trying to find on. Leanr to convert miles to kms quickly, 60 mph is 100 kph. CARRY CASH, would suck to pump 120 bucks into your truck and go inside the station and find out their debit or visa machine isnt working

also just to add to army of ones`s part about gas, may not hurt to bring a couple 5 gallon gas can and fill them up when you get into places that are 400 miles beween fill ups, doesnt hurt to have extra gas, and as army said, fill up when ever you can. and again I would google map the entire trip and figure out the places that are far between and where to stay, that way you can set driving goals to get places on time

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will definitely carry some extra gas and other basic supplies being that I have the 26 gallon tank with a range of 450mi MAX.

I do have a question about firearms though. I was planning on bringing a 12 gauge and ammunition with me. What are the laws/procedures to bring it through Canada?

A 12 gauge is one of the few firearms permitted from what I remember. However, it is best NOT to ask this question on an open forum as you'll get plenty of conflicting stories on what can and cannot cross. With all that said, it is a pain in the arse to get a firearm across.

To find out the information on what paperwork you will need (and there is a bit of it to be filled out); your best bet is to go to the boarder crossing website. There is a LOT of information there on what needs to be filled out and how to file it. IIRC, there is also a $50 fee to process the paperwork on the Canadian side.

I didn't need a firearm when I moved up or on any of my other trips. I will go to one of the other forums that I frequent that has some links and bring that information back to here for you. You can also check it out yourself at http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/

If you are going to be living in the dorms, they are not permitted to be kept with you in the room (I know people who have tried and were kicked from the dorms immediately upon it's report to campus Police). You will have to leave it in lockup at the campus Police station and they have limited hours of when you can retrieve it / put it back.

I cant see it being that bad, in the fall there are TONS of americans coming my way to hunt... maybe its a bit different because they are hunting but... then again I have never done it so I deffinetly dont know for sure, call customs and give your situation and ask what you can bring and how you have to go about it. best way to know 100% forsure

Well I am on my 2nd day up to Alaska! I am crossing the border at winnipeg. Tommarow morning. I am getting 20.5 mpg so far! I will post pics of the evic when we stop tonight.

Well I made it up here and have been in school for a month. I got my truck winterized also. I am shocked at the labor rate here though! At a private shop I saw 99/hr! I cant imagine what they want at the stealership.
I asked the stealership how much for a full synthetic oil change and it was 95.00 or something! I am thinking of doing it myself. What do I have to do to have the warranty intact if I go this route? Anyone do this in -40?
