Default To my northern neighbors (this means you Canadians :D )

If someone were to be moving to Canada, where would you be telling them they should look around? As far as good jobs/safe/etc?

Me and my dad got into a debate about moving etc and I told him that anywhere is better than SoCal, even Canda!! And he said oh yea you cant know that to which I replied, "I happen to know a group of Canadians planning a US invasion, I wil ask them what their country is like" (then explained the whole forum thing). But that go us to talking, where in Canada would be the best place to move say for a car guy/mechanic/parts sales guy?

Not sure for the job types but you can't beat our climate here. Not to cold in the winter and not to hot in the summer. Summer is high 80s and a little 90's maybe might get a day or to over 100. Only thing that sucks here is the cost of living and housing. Average House is around 590,000 right now but there are lots under htat just million dollar homes really bump up the average for the area

I would ask what type of work you are looking for. Alberta has a lot of oil field type jobs available, Saskatchewan is looking for people to work in the mining industry. Ontario has a lot of jobs available for skilled trades types, as well as professional occupations.

My wife is American and moved to Canada from Michigan. She loves it here, just misses her family. Some other facts about Canada that may help: Canada only has one set of Criminal Laws set in place by the federal government. If it's a crime (not traffic, liquor, parking type stuff) it's the same across the country. Canada is taxed higher, and people like to bitch about our health care, but the basics of it are free (go into emergency room for a couple stitches, it's free). When my wife was going through the process for permanent residency, she did not have health care coverage. An emergency room visit for a bladder infection (seeing a doctor, lab test, antibiotics) cost us under $300. When she went into the emergency room in Michigan, it was a minimum of $1000, without any tests, etc.

Canada is not as overtly patriotic as the US, but most Canadians are very patriotic. It has been proven in the past over and over again. When it comes time for Canadians to step up (WWI and WWII) they stepped up more so than any other country (per capita, obviously we have a lot less people here)

Lots of wide open space in Canada, lots of opportunity, and the recession didn't hit us as hard as the US. Our banking system is more tightly regulated.

I'd have to say the cost of living depends where you live in Canada. I'm in town of 3000 people. Working at a dealer for the past 6 years. Journeyman mechanic, apprentice parts tech. I bought my first house for $165, 000. It was a 1929 with large garage. I just sold and bought a 1976 bungalow. Much newer for $110 000. Houses like these in the city would go for double/triple the price. I am within driving distance to all major cities. It depends if you like the city living or like the country. Weather in alberta is unpredictable, was snowing acouple days ago. You never know what your in for. After going through a pretty good winter last year it was a warm winter this year. Oilfield and mining really help the automotive industry in Alberta and Sask for sure. I was in SoCal acouple weeks ago and I can honestly say I don't know how you deal with traffic lol. Your freeways are crazy compared to the cities I spend time in here and that would be related to your rather large population. As for the car part. Depending what you are into for myself we have our local 1/8th mile bracket races at our local airport, other towns are starting to do this as well. Tons of car shows in the summer. 3 swap meets a year in a nearby city. I could go on but I'd have to say i'm quiet proud to be a Canadian.

Best money wise would be Alberta into the oil field, I would assume it would be pretty secure as long as you can handle working in those conditions, The city I live in in Northern Ontario revolves around mining. It is estimated that there is another 300 years of mining left here. $100 k easily per year, alot more if you want it, they are hiring like its going out of style, even with the recession a few years ago (we are long past that here) it didnt slow down for mining, if anything it picked up. And working isnt underground like what you see on tv with coal mines. I dont mean to start any sort of debate but I think right now Canada has more and better jobs with better job security depending on the field you get into. Also the Potash mines in Saskatchewan are booming like crazy as well, they predict to be 30,000 workers SHORT within 10 years, even better money there than the mines I work in...

also for a car guy/mechanic I think most larger cities you would do great in, the city I live in is only 200,000 people but the mechanics are always swamped, I would assume most other cities and even towns are too, could open a garage doing custom work, you supply the parts and install them, most places I see are one or the other

Almsot time to relocate?? you have mentioned this a few times ss4luck!! hopefully all works out for you and you can go or stay where ever you want and do well!!

Being born and raised in oil rich Alberta and being employed by a company that is directly involved in the oil industry I have to say get into Alberta and don't look back. Red Deer north has some pretty nasty winters but you will get used to it and you certainly drive the right truck to handle an Alberta winter. Calgary is a great city and you will feel right at home driving the famed "Deerfoot" in rush hour (parking lot!). Jobs are plenty and will only get better as Alberta will be creating over 600,000 new jobs over the next 10 years. Source here. There is so much happening in this province it gets fever pitched at times. There is a whack of money to made in the patch. As we say here, if you're not working it's because you don't want to! Come north, the people are friendly, the country is beautiful, and we all talk funny

i agree with alberta or the west of Canada..

while i loved BC when i visited there (chilliwack, vancouver, Whistler), there seems to have been a mass exodus from the majority of Canada to Alberta...

BC is beautiful and has a nice climate, but id never really consider leaving southern ontario. Jobs are getting very scarce here though...all the automotive indistry is gone..GM almost totally closed..Dana, gone...then the ripple effect..not good. tourism is our primary industry in my area.

haha honestly, if I had someone saying I have a guaranteed job working X amount of hours for X amount of money, ESPECIAlLLY in the auto industry I would be anywhere in a heart beat really. I HATE SoCal when it really comes down to it. I didn't have enough financial backing for the time being to stay in Michigan or I would have, in the year I was out of Ca and in Mi the job market took a major poo and I had no idea I would be this long without stable work. Friends that I know would drive to the ends of the earth for me at 3am can't afford to give me even part time work at their shops sweeping floors for walk around money.

I'd have no problem moving to CAN, as long as I can bring the ram, my camaro, and my dog lol

Luckily, moving all 3 across the border is fairly straight forward. I would also encourage you to look at alberta or saskatchewan. If you have any experience with heavy machinery or diesel engines them I can give you the names of 5-10 companies looking for people. If you live outside of the main metropolitan areas the house prices are quite reasonable, but the cities are getting stupid again. If you want work almost guaranteed then look at ft macmurray, there is so much happening within 2hr of that city it's unbelievable.

Best thing about Alberta is there is only one sales tax, so we pay 5%, not the 12-13.5% that ornery provinces are paying.
