Default ABS and Brake light coming on

[2006 1500 Sport 4x4 5.7L]

Last week, I had to brake somewhat hard (didn't lock anything or even engage the abs) and shortly after the abs and brake lights came on. Stopped and checked the fluid level, but it was in the proper range. I shut her down and restarted her, but it didn't go off. Got into town, run in the store for 5 minutes and when I came out, the lights were off and stayed off till I got back on the highway. Ordered an ABS Speed Sensor the next day.

I looked at it the next day, added a tiny amount of fluid and drove it up and down the highway (1-2 miles each way)and couldn't get the lights to come back on.

Later though, after 3 miles (figures, right?) they came back on. Shut it off again in town and they didn't come back on again till I was 4 miles into the highway drive home.

I replaced the ABS speed sensor Tuesday, and got a chance to drive it into town tonight. Got 20 miles into town, made a couple stops, shut 'er off, then turned her back on after 10-15 minutes and after a couple minutes I got the ding ding damn lights back on again. This time I was sitting in park and not moving at all.

What else could be causing this? Going to drive me nuts.

Having a similar issue with my '06 Hemi. Doesn't do it in the colder months, just spring and summer. Randomly comes on for no reason while driving but will always go away after I cycle the key. Interested to see some replies here, I'm leaning toward a wheel speed sensor like you, but haven't spent any dio time on it yet.

Subscribing to this thread.

Had my lights come on in park the other day right as i got it into park then shut right off. I was parked over a street gutter so my drivers side was lower than the pass side. Brake fluid was at correct level. The light hasnt come back again.

Parking brake engagement sometimes can set those lights off. A faulty ABS pump will also set that light. So can wheel sensors.

Unfortunately, a regular OBD2 scan tool will not tell you what is the culprit. You need a real diagnostics tool(probably have to pay someone at a garage, or dealer). And the light has to be on at that time(doesn't store the info).

Any updates to this problem ? I noticed this is starting to occur in my truck.
1st thing in the morning when i turn the key on the ABS and Brake lights stay on. Ive checked the fluid, there at the correct level. Crawled under the truck and checked the connection to the rear abs sensor, it appears to be ok. If i cycle the key a few times, it goes away. Drive it around town and it doesn't come on, only in the morning when i first turn the key on.

I will try and replace the sensor this weekend and see if that changes anything.

Had same problem, it turned out that it was the wire harness where it plugs into the abs pump. It was loose, zip tied it to hold it and haven't had any more issues
