Default Hitch class IV or not ?

Hi guys,

Hope somebody will be able to answer me ?! I have a 2010 dodge RAM with a hitch on it, I bought my truck brand new and paid for the class IV hitch option when I ordered the truck but on my bumper it only says 5000lbs max ??? Did i get screwed up ? Or do they all come like that ? i try to look on the hitch itself with my flashlight and I didnt find any rating on it. The class IV should be 10000lbs right ??
I would like to know if anybody with the class IV has the 5000lbs or 10000lbs on the rear bumper.

Thanks guys !

I believe thats what the bumper hitch will haul if put a ball in the bumper. The undermount hitch will be the proper weight class

the thing it only says 5000lbs gross weight and 500lbs tongue weight ! And nowhere it tells me 10000lbs, I do have the bill of sale and it does say class IV but if I get pulled over I can technically get a fine as nowhere it says that I can pull 10000lbs ?!! I may go back to the dealer where I bought it. I'm pretty sure it should be written somewhere 10000lbs and I dont see it !

Only if you pull from the bumper will you get a fine.

You have to have the hitch receiver UNDER your bumper. That should be 10,000lbs if a CLIV, 7 or 6,000 (Cant remember offhand) if CLIII.

Either way you will be over your rating if you pull 10k. Your Ram is only rated to tow 8k according to the Ram website.

The bumper is not the class IV hitch. The class IV is below the bumper, see my lighted RAM. If you don't have a hitch under the bumper you don't have a class IV.

Like they said:

The wording stamped on the bumper is what the BUMPER is rated for. So if you put a ball on the bumper and tow with that ball, you can tow 5,000 lb (500 lb tongue weight).

Most rams with a hitch under the bumper have a class III (IIRC) hitch. Again IIRC this is rated for 5,000 lb (500 lb tongue weight). Some one correct me if I'm mistaken. This is the hitch that is a small piece that bolts on under the bumper.

Class IV (IIRC) is what I bought (since it was on sale for the same price as the class III) and it also connects to the frame rails on both sides, and is rated for something like 7,500 lb (750 lb tongue weight). Again, someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

My hitch has a sticker that lists the ratings, yours should too(or an engraving). The engraving on the bumper is only for the bumper.

I do have the one under the bumper and I'm currently towing with it, I'm just surprised that nowhere it tells you the max you can tow ! It doesnt seem right to me, I should have those infos on the hitch frame itself, I installed a few hitches before and you always have a plate or sticker that goes with the hitch.

Thanks for the answers anyways, I thought I got screwed up when I bought it.

Does the hitch connect to the frame rails? Or is it only a small plate that bolts in just under the bumper?

I have the Curt 13333 which is a CLIII, and it said 6,000lbs IIRC. Sucks because I am going to have to upgrade when I tow the boat, which comes in at 300lbs over that.

One way to tell frenchy, is if your hitch is bolted to the frame of your truck on both sides. If it is, then you have a CLIV. If it is only bolted to the bumper support (the tube that goes across the truck behind the bumper) then it is a CLIII.
