Default Volant CAI vs Fastman & Drop in (opinions wanted)

I have a 22in mag and y-pipe, basically wanting more throttle response and butt dyno.

Let me know what you guys think.

Get JBA shorty headers if you can spare that kind of money. I have everything on my 11 and I would say besides my circle d torque converter, the headers are the next best upgrade without tuning available. To answer your question if you had to choose the drop in + the fastman tb vs a cai.....I probably would do the fastman and drop in. I really couldn't be much help because I had my TC and Fastman TB put on the same day. CAI by themselves are that much increase (probably less than 5hp) but when you combine it with other air in/air out bolts on thats when you really can tell.

How much are we talking about for the shorty headers with install?

Well they are $555 at autoanything but they are probably still on back order....its free if you don't mind doing the dirty work, I didn't after hearing how much of PITA the headers bolts were to get on/off. I don't have patience for 1/8 of a round of a time...I got my headers installed here in the Houston area for $175 but thats pretty damn cheap....BlackRamHemi did a before and after dyno with his buddy and they should a increase of 15-20hp/20-25tq....you'd probably see 5-10 hp at most if you added a CAI and a Fastman TB together (pretty much the same price as the headers).

Thanks for the info on the headers fellas. But at 555 for a back ordered item and 175 install we're talking 730 and I'm not doing that at this point in time.

I've installed a CAI in 2 previous hemis and been pleased with the results. However I'm not impressed with the fitment and price of the Volant, I have higher standards than that. I do know that I want an enclosed intake and Im willing to wait until S&B releases theirs. It looks awesome.

Nobody has an opinion on these two options???

So far all I have got is to do headers instead.

You need to look at it as an entire system working together from the point of air coming in and finishing at the point of exhaust. You have the exhaust part of the puzzle done, so you can exit the air but know you have to bring it in. It all starts with the intake, so it doesnt make much sense to have everything else unrestictive if your starting point isnt . My advice would be to get a CAI, and then a fastman when funds allow ( they are really not that expensive).

I have a K&N CAI and a Corsa catback exhaust. Yesterday I added the standard mod Fastman TB. The Cai and corsa made a difference but now since I added the tb in about 200 miles of driving yesterday I noticed a noticeable gain in the butt dyno and mpg was slightly better.

Look IMO I'm telling you this without tuning a CAI is really not worth the money (have numbers to prove my reasoning/experience with my untunable ram)....the stock cai flows more than enough (you can even add a feeder tube for next to nothing) because the computer is gonna limit your air/fuel ratio on the stock tune....so to counter that, getting the exhaust out (adding headers vs the restrictive stock headers)is the best thing you can do for an untuned 2011 and up ram truck at this point. By doing this, which in turn is gonna keep your air/fuel ratio more consistant by freeing the exhaust out resulting in more air able to get in and out any way. Which is gonna equal in better HP/Tq/MPG compared to just trying to stuff more air in (Adding CAI) with those POS stock headers.

Here are actually dyno numbers that were taken by Flaco (the man around here in houston when it comes to truck performance) on his 2011 Dodge Ram RT before and after he added an K&N CAI. Stock dyno numbers were 306hp/311tq (found on first page of thread) and after CAI 308hp/316tq....so a whopping 2hp/5tq gain with a CAI. Not worth it over the JBA shorty headers that net 15hp/15tq (more if tuned maybe another 5hp/5tq)

Thread of before and after CAI Dyno Numbers
http://houstonperformancetrucks.com/...-Project/page3

Thread where BlackRamHemi and MGRAM-10 had a baseline before and after JBA Shorty headers installed.
http://ramforumz.com/showthread.php?...hlight=headers

So yeah conventinally the big three (CAI,Exhaust, and a tuner) would be the first route to take but for us guys without tuning IMO opening the exhaust to allow more out is the best route to take at this point for HP/TQ/MPG. If I had a crystal ball and knew we wouldn't have tuning for our trucks a year ago when I added a CAI, I would have just stuck with the stock setup and added a feeder tube/filter. Do the math, a CAI adds 2hp/5tq for $300-$350, while the ceramic coated JBA shorty headers add 15hp/15tq for $555....So the most bang for the buck award goes to the headers but don't listen to a man that has done all the mods you can do without tuning because he doesn't know jack....just saying

BTW I would just save that $300 dollars if your leaning towards the CAI....Fastman/headers a pretty good combo but about twice as much as you want to spend

Personally I would seriously consider the advice you are getting, but if the choices are ONLY the two you have put out I would go with the drop in and TB. The stock cai is not really that bad AND due to the poor fitment and crappier customer service responce Volant will never see another of my dollars.
