Default 2nd gen rebuild

hello, me and my best friend are planning on buying a 2nd gen. Dodge ram 2500 5.9L Cummins that is kind of run down and needs
-paint work
-body work
-engine work (but still runs now)
-interior work
but we don't wanna get something thats a total P.O.S. we want it running when we get it but we still want to tear it completely down and then rebuild it. and then we are going to sell it. and split the profit. basically we are doing this purely for experience on the diesel engine, i want a 2004 dodge ram 2500 5.9L cummins and he wants an '06 cummins. but for the project we want a 2nd gen so it's not terribly expensive...but not a ton of miles so it can still be sold rather easily. we both have general ideas of what we want to do to it. we don't want a completely stock looking truck, but not something that someone wouldn't use on a farm either. and we don't want it to be a speed demon, but we don't want a snail either. so we have a few performance mods in mind. he is a few of our ideas
1. rebuild engine
2. install S&B Cold Air Intake & Performance Intake Elbow
3. high output alternator
4. FASS Cummins Titanium Series Fuel Air Separation Systems
5. MBRP Single Exhaust Stack System 409 Stainless Steel
6. MBRP black 8" stack by 36" high
7. then we might do some low horsepower injectors
8. then gauges inside on the pillar.
9. then a leveling kit or 3" lift.
10. we want a chip that has performance settings along with mileage settings
the interior has a few mods also
11. we want to put a decent radio in
12. replace stock speakers with aftermarket ones
13. paint some of the dash and do L.E.D. lights all inside and other stuff
14. running boards
and i know i'm forgetting a lot of stuff...but thats a start. what do you all think??? please no just negative and mean comments

It would definitely be a learning experience. I say go for it. There will definitely be times you want to throw in the towel but just stick with it and don't be afraid to ask for help. All ina ll though it sounds like a good plan. Can't wait to see what you two come up with.

Go with a 2000.. Can call it the Millennium Roller (play on coal roller and the millennium year). Have you decided on a 12 valve or a 24 valve??

Some tips from my '98 Cummins 4x4 build up:

Tuners:
MADS Smarty stacked with an EDGE Comp or Juice
- Smarty is a programmer and is the most useful tool/performance part you'll find. Vast low end improvements.
- EDGE is a "box" and will allow you on the fly adjustability and will take care of the high end improvements. You can also get the CTS or Attidude displays which will take the place of guages and save money down the road.

Go with an AIRDOG fuel/air separator or "lift pump" instead of the FASS. Filters are more available and it is a better value for the same pump...FASS is owned by the kids of the guy who started AIRDOG.

Don't bother with the S&B elbow unless adding methanol or wanting a mount point for boost guages...or you are installing twin turbo's. There is a reason the 3rd gen rams wanted a 2nd gen elbow. Also, go with an AMSOIL or AEM DryFlow filter in an IceBox intake, they filter much more effectively than an oil filter which is very important on a diesel and the IceBox is the only intake proven to reduce intake temps significantly.

On the exhaust to not run more than a 4" diameter down pipe or you will lose backpressure, and hurt your low end torque.

With a 3" level and appropriate wheels you can clear 37" tires and keep the suspension geometry close to stock, which is always a plus.

If possible try to find one that has the following:
Manual transmission or a "built" auto transmission.
If over 150k miles try to find out if the injector pump has been replaced. If not there shouldn't be any issues, just make sure to put the AIRDOG pump on asap!

Also, if you decide to go with injectors go with a high quality brand like industrial injection. The cheaper brands don't have precision injector tips, resulting in a less efficient spray pattern than stock. A set of high quality 60 horse injectors will result in a more efficient fuel burn improving power AND efficiency...a win/win!
