Question v6-v8 swap?

my 2001 ram has a 3.9L V6 and my buddy is selling a 318 Ram engine.... I was curious as to weather or not it would fit my truck???

i know it will fit but if i wanted to use it coud i just pull my Engine out and drop this one in with the Current Transmission? its a 5 Speed Manual.... If i can do that what other Problems Might i also Run in to?? Thanks for all your help in advance.......

Ps.... Im sorry if this is in the wrong place, But i didnt really know where else to put it

No you would have to change the bell housing on the manual to get it to fit to the 5.2L or a 5.9L block, the 3.9L uses a totally different bolt pattern then the 5.2 or 5.9.

You won't run into many other problems, only problem is you will have to use the 5.2L ECM that is made for a Manual Transmission and that's about it.

Ummmm, when did this bolt pattern change happen? The 3.9 has had the same bellbousing bolt pattern as the 5.2 and 5.9 since inception. Your V6 probably has the NV3500-type 5-speed. It's lighter than the NV4500 used in the 2500 and 3500 Dodges, but it was used in the 1500 and the V8 Dakota. You will need the V8 computer. Typically, the V6 Dodge computers were V8 units with two missing injector wires in their harnesses. I suppose you could have it re-flashed for V8 parameters and add the two injector wires. On the OBDI units (yours is the newer OBDII), swapping in a V8 meant adding a V8 computer because they couldn't be re-flashed, but adding two injector wires was a common thing since it was considerably cheaper (back then) than buying a V8 harness. Nowadays, it's probably easier to get a V8 engine harness and just swap them out. Engine mounts are the same, as is the bellhousing. You will need a 5.2 flywheel. The V6 flywheel has only six exciter points (6 cylinders) for the crankshaft sensor to read. Going to the V8, you will need the matching 5.2 Magnum flywheel. You will also need the V8 exhaust manifolds. Should bolt right up to your head pipes. Also, if this is a 5.2 that is currently paired with an automatic, the crank will not have the pilot bushing installed. Magnums tended to be pre-drilled for the bushing, but you will need to have that installed.

I take back what I said, the 3.9L and 5.2L bolt patterns are the same, it's the 5.2 and 5.9 that are different. But you will have to use a V8 Manual ECM. The V6 and V8 ECM's do have circuitry differences.

The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same between the 3.9 and the 5.2, so why once again, ramvan, would it not fit?

I could of sworn ATSG said different, but we all make mistakes. I do know the for a fact the 5.2L and 5.9L have different bolt patterns.

The 3.9 V6 was derived from the 5.2(318), which was derived from the 273 V8. Further developments include the 340 V8 and 5.9(360) V8. They all have the same bolt pattern at the bellhousing. Maybe you're thinking about the inline 6 cylinder 5.9 Cummins diesel. It's different from the gas engines.

I just had one of them brain farts, exam week coming up I don't know if I'm coming or going. But I am sure the SB and BB bolt pattern is different, as a matter of fact I had seen a photo on the internet of the two patterns and I just went looking for it and cannot find it (my luck).
