Default Dynotech Replacement Driveshaft (Upgrade)

Howdy everybody, It has been a while since I have made a thread and I have myself a project coming up next week. As you already know I have a 1995 Ram 2500 Van, has Chrysler 9.25 axle with 3.55 gear, custom built 46RH, and the legendary 5.2L, so on so forth. As stupid as it may sound trying to make this van into a performance machine (lol). But why not? It would be fun!
Well after many years of service my stock driveshaft has finally began to show it's faults, vibrations, bad rust, so on. So I called up the gentlemen at Dynotech and ordered myself a custom shaft but it's quite the upgrade from stock.

I ordered a custom made 4140 DOM Steel Shaft, 4" X .083" with a Spicer Cast Slip Yoke, Spicer 1350 Solid Body U-Joints, and like all Dynotech Shafts they are balanced at a minimum of 5,000 RPM to a maximum of 8,000. This replacement shaft is much lighter then stock so maybe I will see an improvement with launch and possibly long term fuel economy.

What makes this upgrade special is the fact that the stock driveline uses Chrysler 7290 U-Joints and my new shaft uses 1350's. So part of this wonderful project is replacing my pinion yoke with a Forged Steel, Victory Performance 1350 Pinion Yoke for the Chrysler 9.25, a very hard to find part but not impossible. This is a major upgrade and a very special upgrade as finding 1350's on a Chrysler 9.25 isn't very common especially when married to a 46RH, more popular among the straight 727's but generally with a Dana 60 Axle.

As I have just ordered the driveshaft this past Friday, Dynotech will not be able to begin making it until Tuesday due to holiday weekend. The sales rep was very kind and informed me it would probably ship on Thursday or Friday of this week (yay).

Once I get the driveshaft I will post pictures of the it. I also have a photo of the pinion yoke somewhere.

So stay tuned to this thread as I update it with photos of my work. First step will be replacing the pinion yoke.

Since last Christmas I have:
Rebuilt transmission
Replace Rear Shocks
Replace fuel pump, tank mount hardware and rubber filler tube grommet
Replace axle bearings and seals
Re-wrapped ECM harnesses
And so on.


The stock shaft has gone straight to hell with rust,



Yep, I need new exhaust system that's for dam sure. But a little at a time gets it done.

Yea the exhaust is on my list, the CAT cost alot and I tried to remove the muffler and everything is well rusted solid so I'm going to have to cut the pipes, wonderful!

I needed a new shaft more then the exhaust cause my old shaft is exhibiting some nasty vibration, when I lifted the rear end on jack stands put the truck in drive you could see the driveshaft bobbing up and down a little.

Why not aluminum?
Stronger. I thought it would be cheaper but was I wrong, either way it was going to be expensive and damn it was. But hey I don't have to worry about this shaft! The replacement shaft tube is rated to about 4500 ft-lbs and 7500 RPM.

As for the exhaust, I have some special plans for it I was thinking of putting side pipes on but it would be a "special" setup that will compliment both performance and emissions and noise ordinances. I eventually will rebuild the engine for performance and the dyno simulator shows a 80 HP difference between open exhaust and stock. Thing is with open exhaust it might not work as well as anticipated because these engines like most need some back pressure to work properly, especially since it has an O2 sensor and what not. Ever since they threw a computer in huh...

Hect yea, I ordered it on May 29th ish and I installed it on June 5th. So far I put about 2000 miles on the shaft and it's perfect. There is a vibration still but it's from the angles because my rear suspension is shot out so yesterday and today I am replacing the rear suspension. I can tell you it's not nice removing 17 year old springs, them front eye bolts had to be tiger sawed out.

Anyways, I think I have pics of the new shaft, yea here I have a public album on facebook.

I lived in MA till I was 25 nothing like working on a 15yo car subjected to road salt. Lots of saws and torches anytime work needed to be done.

Well same thing here with this van, I was born in NJ and lived there about 13 years and the van well spent about 10-13 years of it's life in NJ and the rest is being spent in FL. But eitherway, that rock salt ruins thing, the frame in the rear is starting to rot out completely so I have to fix that before it's too late. But the new driveshaft is very nice, I completed installing the rear suspension yesterday. I can tell you, it's a totally different animal now with this new suspension. Almost no body roll, it doesn't take turns as gracefully it's tends to loose traction, it has the comfort of a f-250 (no comfort), but there is 4600Lbs of total weight capacity at the rear so it's catch-22, can't have the support without loosing comfort. I upgraded the hardware too, the u-bolts and pivot bolts were grade 5, i went up to grade 8. The old u-bolts were 1/2" diameter the new ones are 5/8". I replaced the old spring plates with some cnc laser cut 3/8" plates from ballistic fabrication. And all the bushings have been replaced, rubber bushings of course. But so far I have put about 6000 bucks into this van in the past year to year and half. This weekend I have to replace the torque converter and next week I'm rebuilding the entire A/C system, I have a front and rear A/C system. On top of all that I am re-insulating the driver side of the van, the old insulation is R11, I moved up to R13 and didn't get to finish the entire van. But everything is all good thus far. The new suspension corrected the driveline geometry which is what I was looking for.
