Yea the manual is whats killing me but i just dont think id be happy with an auto. I would just buy the 2002 5.9 auto i just looked at, if i could do auto. it was quad cab 4x4 (super clean) with 44k ,on it for 13,800. Sorry im stressing bc i sold my truck yesterday since the guy offered me more than i was asking for it, and i have to figure out some way to get to work tonight. lol

buying when you are in a hurry is a bad idea. i think you are hung up on the auto vs manual. find the best truck for your money and if it has the auto then thats the way it goes. might want to check out the hemi engine also.

I actually really like a 99 2500 cummins 4x4 5spped i drove. they wanted 13000 for it and it had 129000 on it. 13000 just seems kind of high for a 99 even though it is a diesel.

Book it out on KBB/NADA and see what private party or dealer retail is, which ever applies. I know the 5.9 cummins is a sought after engine because when they are taken care of they will run forever.

Just gotta remember these are guides...It never hurts to just throw a number at someone and see what they say IF the truck is what you are after.

Happy hunting!

Ok soo now im seriously considering just buying a new truck. Im going to be commuting an hr and a half everyday round trip for 2 years and need something reliable. Theres a dealer near me that has a lifetime powertrain warranty at no charge and will match any dealers price so i think i may go that route. Whats you opinions on gear ratio? Will having a 3.92 get that much worse of milage? I work on a farm and tow loaded hay trailers and will be towing a tt thats 6400 dry weight.

If you're towing at all get the 3.92, it doesn't really affect mpg except at high cruising speeds. It'll only really affect it if you speed on the highway, keep it at 70-75mph and you'll be good. If you cruise at 80-85 then you'll likely see a big drop in mpg over the 3.55.

IMO you ought to buy a truck that's a year old, you'll save about 50% of the money vs buying new and have a nearly new and very reliable truck. That's what I did, I bought a 2010 in 2011 IIRC it was like 9 months old. I got it for roughly half what it would cost new. I also got a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and a "certified preowned" warranty. I'm honestly not even sure what all it covers but all I care about is the 100,000 miles powertrain warranty.

From what I've heard, the lifetime warranty is a sales pitch. I've heard it doesn't cover anything that normally causes failure(timing chain or tensioner breaking, for example). You also have to keep it services IIRC by the dealer or an "approved" shop...

I looked up their warranty and you can service it at a shop of your choosing just keep records and it is an exact mirror of the factory warranty. They also offer it on certified preowned vehicles. The only problem is with used vehicles payments are more due to the shortened payment period. and thanks for the info on 3.92 ill definitely go that route

What shortened payment period? I got a 60 month loan on mine...

I hear people say the interest rates are worse on used vehicles, too, which is true but you can still get a good rate. I got a good rate.

I remember there was a thread a while back about what people paid for their trucks and some people(most it seemed) paid crazy monthly payments. And then they had 6 or 7 year loans too. I couldn't believe it. There was one guy whose payment was more than my mortgage!

Well I'd look into it and see because mine was the first vehicle I'd ever bought as well. See what kind of deal they'll give you...

I was 23 at the time, don't know if age makes a difference. I had good credit score though. Emphasis on "had" because apparently after you buy a truck and house your score drops drastically
