Angry 5.9l 2500 just rebuilt wont run

So i just got the engine back together with even a new yellow top battery and a new starter to boot. Now I got it running and drove it around the block and let it run for a while in driveway. It was smoking so I decided to shut it of and opened the hood where I found that one of me spark plug wires wasn't on the distributer. I plugged it in and tried to start it. It then started but immediatley shut off. Now it just continues to turn over but won't start. I have got it to start and immediatley shut off twice since then but won't run. Also noticed that now my gas guage doesn't move and I don't think my tempurature guage was working right but IDK for sure. Anyone got any ideas on anything that could cause all of that to go out at once or did the truck just decide to take a crap all at once all together. I was pretty excited about this truck when I bought it but kind of turning me against it real fast after all the time and money I just spent on this thing and now this. Its a 1999 ram 2500 with 5.9l V8 with 1 ton brakes, axles, suspention with tow package and plow package. Just in case any of that would help.

It sounds to me like something is up with the distributor or electrical system anyway. Check spark first, then fuel, then compression(I'm sure you have compression on a new motor).

First off what was causing the smoking?
Do you know if the distributor set correctly? If you adjusted it then it may be out of sync with the crank and cam sensors.
Guages won't work till I believe the electical systems completes a loop?

i made sure the distributer was ok before i took it out on the road i've had that problem before on other things so that should be fine. Also if you turn the key to the on position even if you don't start the truck the guages should work if there is heat up tto a certain degree it should register and the gas guage should tell you how much gas you have. so IDK yet still have to get a second hand to help check for spark and I haven't made it to actually putting a guage om the fuel rail yet just wonderedif anybody had ever had a problem like this to lead me in the right direction.

After thinking some more, sounds like an electrical issue for the whole truck. Maybe a main ground issue, loose battery connection, etc.

Oh and yeah, where was the smoke coming from?

The smoke was coming from the exhaust. Figured it was just burning crap out from the rebuild and the one plug not firing. Does anyone think it might be the computer? there was nothing to the coil to the destributer so i changed out the coil, and still nothing. So either crank sensor or what

If computer goes faulty usualy there will be no CEL on dash when you turn on the key nor will you hear fuel pump or injector prime. Now id go electrical as well but start with computer. See if it turns on cel fuel prime all that jazz. Move out from there connections to pcm sensors map tps on down the line till you come to dash. Even do a code scan with a good hand held after your sure you have a good computer and fuel pressure at rail. A good hand held will let you test sensors individualy and if you do happen to start it freeze frame last thing to happen before it shut down.

How do you test the comuters in the rams? Other then buying a new computer and hoping that helps. I did a quick search a could really find a clear way to test the computer to see if thats the problem.

Well if you have a check eng light that comes on when you turn on key. You should be able to go to an auto parts store and rent a scanner and go through the trucks sensors and test differnt curcuits and step down there. Remember to ask if you can do individual checks with there scanner some will some won't. I would concentrate fuel spark then sensor. Hope you get it. Notheng worse then going through that work and driveing it then fail.

I tried spark but nothing and i couldn't hear the fuel pump prime but i kinda brushed it off to being a big truck maybe thats why i couldn't hear it im use to sport compacts and stuff were the fuel pump is litteraly like a foot away. and even then stock pumps aren't that loud. So if I get the scanner what am I looking for to know if the computer itself is bad or will it just tell me so?
