Default Building a chevy drag engine?

I'm looking for an engine for my 91 s10 drag truck I just bought. I really want to put a big block but everyone says that it takes a lot of work. But a friend says he's got a Jasper 350 out of a 87 blazer with tbi and only 32000 miles on motor. Said he'd sell it for $600 to me. Is this engine going to be worth getting as a base to build up or should I keep looking. It's my first all drag car and hoping low 12s maybe even 11s.

^I agree. Chevy 350's have more aftermarket than any other engine. That makes parts cheaper.

A big block in an s10 is a ton of work. There's a lot of fitment issues, you have to modify the frame rails, firewall, and use slim radiator and electric fan which are both costly. Or use a pusher fan on the front of the radiator. It'd all add up real fast.

Also, they make 350 conversion kits that are affordable, that'd make the 350 a "bolt in" item...

I don't know anything about it except what I've already said. My real question is, is the jasper engine going to be worth getting so I can finish the truck in the next couple months then pull the engine in the winter to build it up where I want it?

Jasper engines are good products, but they won't get you to your goal of low 12's. You're only talking about 350hp max from that engine the way they come built. I don't know if the guy changed anything else, but 350hp in a 3,500 lb truck, you're looking at more like 13's at best. What transmission and rear gear ratio? That'll make the difference between 14's or 13's.

Also, since it's tbi, you're going to need the complete harness/computer from his truck.

I don't have a trans or rear end for it yet. I bought it no engine trans and old owner stuck the stock rear back under it so it rolled and kept his rear. And I will be getting a carb intake for it so I don't have to worry about computers and lots of wires.

If you pull it out later and build it up, a different set of heads, a cam, and higher compression can probably net you ~400-450hp. You could always increase displacement too with a stroker kit. It's easy to make 450hp out of a 383 cid kit.

Jasper engines are drop in mild performance engines. Not really what you're looking for IMO. But if you get that good of a deal on a good engine, and plan to change it anyway, it's a good buy.
