Default installing a class IV hitch

So i have a '10 1500 Laramie, but it came with out a tow package (a way for the dealer to keep the price down and gain on upgrades). and i wanted to install a class IV hitch. How do i even go about that. Not sure what parts to order and the difficulty of the install. The dealer isn't much help as they have no idea what they are doing. any suggestions/ pics?

The hitch install is really easy, it will jut bolt to your frame.
Depending on the hitch you may have to drill a few holes.
All you need to order is the hitch or hitch receiver as some companies call it that fits your model of truck
With a few hand tools and a little bit of time its easy peasy!!
That's really all there is to it.

I was reading in the forums something about mounting to the bumper and mounting to the frame and how it affects towing. If I just get the OEM hitch receiver, that should be fine? or is there a specific OEM kit I need?

Thanks for the help

The hitch most people have is the class III hitch. It's a small plate basically, that bolts in right under the bumper. It is rated for 6,000 lb and 600 lb tongue weight.

A class IV hitch uses the same mounting points, but also has rails that extend to the frame on each side. It bolts to the frame rails as well as the center. It is rated for 10,000 lb and 1,000 lb tongue weight. It also weighs 41 lb more than the class III hitch.

I put the class IV on my truck, just because when I was buying a hitch it was on sale for the exact same price as the class III and I figured over kill is only going to be safer.

Class III:

Curt #13333

Class IV:

Curt #14374

Install of the class IV took me about 1-2 hours, you have to lower the spare tire, and a buddy's help(for holding the hitch up) helps as it's heavy. I'm sure the class III could be done in half the time with one person.

If you didn't get the tow package, you should consider an aftermarket transmission cooler too.

FYI all 4th gen 1500's have the same transmission cooler. I'm not sure what the "tow package" gives you but the transmission coolers are the same in all 1500's (v8 anyway.....not sure about v6's...)

You are half right, Sean. The tow package includes an additional transmission cooler, as well as an oil cooler and other goodies.

Mine had the tow package (had all of this), but it didn't have a hitch. Go figure.

Where are they located? IIRC my truck has the "tow package" but only has a radiator, AC condenser/transmission cooler combo unit, and PS cooler.

well I don't have "tow package" on my build sheet, but the following is listed:

NHDP Heavy Duty Transmission Oil Cooler
NMCP Heavy Duty Engine Cooling
