Default new project in the works

Hello everyone:

My wife and son are getting me a couple of 12 inch LED strip lights for my truck.

My plan is to install them in the bed, under the tonneau cover, possibly under the bed rails, shining down into the bed, and use a switch of sorts to turn them on and off.

I'd love to add some sort of mercury switch (or other motion activated switch) so that when I open the cover they come on automatically, but I'm still not sure that I'd trust a motion switch not to stay on. I don't open the cover that often and I worry about battery drain with the lights staying on all the time. I'll figure something out when I do the install.

My question... what is everyone using for a source of power for their in bed lights? I was thinking that I'd tap into the constant hot on the trailer wiring harness as it's probably the closest to the bed, and the easiest to access...

I'm just curious, as I'm sure I'll figure something out eventually.

In either case I'll be sure to post pics (to keep the pic whores happy) and perhaps even do a write up of sorts)

I'd like to add led lights under the bed rails too. I've seen the mopar instructions for wiring them into the interior lights, so they can be operated with the key fob buttons, but I would like to wire them in with the cargo light, so they can be turned on with the cargo button by the headlight switch. Does anyone know how to tap into that circuit?

I went the dome circuit route so the fob can trigger them. It's okay but not ideal as there are times where I have to hit the fob as the delay is just not long enough. I think the best way to do this would be with a switch as well as a cut-out plunger switch. The idea is when the plunger switch is triggered by closing the tailgate it will turn the lights off regardless of the toggle switch position. Then when those times arise when you are transporting something with the tailgate down the toggle switch can turn the lights off.
The cargo circuit isn't a bad idea but when I need bed lights 9 out of 10 times I don't want to be bothered to run to the cab to turn them on, thus going with the domes and fob idea! Anyhow, when I get time I'm going to re-do my install to the plunger and toggle switch method, which I'm pretty sure I saw here on the Z, just can't find the thread. When I re-do this mod I'm just going to steal power from the trailer harness.

Power from the trailer harness might be the perfect option. Fairly simple and close by. I might just mount a simple switch under the rails by the tailgate, so I just reach in and turn them on when I need them. That way the upper cargo light doesn't need to be on as well. Thanks Stump3r!

Thanks everyone. The lights came in yesterday, now I just need to find the time to install them. My next day off doesn't seem to be until Tuesday (maybe), so it'll probably wait until then.

I'm thinking at this point that I'll use some sort of motion switch, provided that I can find one locally, otherwise I'm just gonna install a toggle type switch near the left rear corner so it's within easy reach when I open the tail gate/ tonneau cover.

I'll update as I go
