Default 03 Engine Swap Questions

Hi Ram Fanz,

My name is John Edwards this will be my biggest post since I became a member of the forum and this is my question,

I have an 03 Dodge Ram SLT 4.7L 4x4, the engine has almost 200,000 miles on it, the body, transmission, and differential are all in great shape, but I can feel the motor getting sluggish and I can feel the loss of porwe from time to time and I am looking to swap the motor to a 5.9L, basicially, I want to know is this a direct swap, or will there be come cutting and welding involved in the process, or will it be more practical to just go ahead and get another 4.7L?

Any help is good help, thanks in advance everyone.

I'm going to assume you mean the 5.9L magnum based on the sub section you posted in. I would actually recommend looking at the 5.7L instead as there is more support for the swap and it is the same transmission as the 4.7L.

The 5.7 would be more of a direct swap than a 5.9 (the aforementioned transmission). Might as well start out a 100hp more with better fuel economy. The engine itself will be a straight drop in with the factory mounts. Where the fun begins is wiring. 4.7 that year has a throttle cable, hemis are fly-by-wire. This swap has been done and posted on several forums online, you shouldn't have TOO many problems doing it. Of course it WOULD be more practical to put the same engine back in and avoid all the headaches, but wouldn't be as fun.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Ok, so the 5.7L looks like my option, but as far as my transmission and perfomance, will anything be sacrificed if I swap?

I remember reading a forum once some guy did a hemi swap into a dakota and it was a lottttttt of work. Oil pan cutting, possible firewall tweaking. I cant remember exactly but it was a yellow rig with a body lift, actually a sweet truck. Unless you want to spend a lot of time and money custom making parts (unless some company makes a kit, someone correct me if I'm wrong) I'd go with another 4.7... Theyre better motors than the 318s and 360's IMO, faster, wind up quicker, Ive had all 3 and def prefer the 4.7...

In fact he's trying to sell it on Craigslist, found this accidentally:
