Default motion switch

anyone know where I can find a motion switch? I'm looking for something like the old mercury switches, but doesn't necessarily have to be mercury.

I'm about to start an install on some lights under my tonneau cover/ bed rails, and want to do it so that when I open it up the lights come on automatically.

I haven't had a lot of luck locally at any of the local auto parts stores, and Radio Shack only had switches that were not rated at 12V (the 3 that I found were only three or four volts)

Just mount a push button under the lid. As soon as the button is opened, the light comes on. When it is closed, the light goes off.

I'm looking to install some under my tonneau as well. I am thinking of putting a switch on the dash panel that is under the stealing column. Ill sub this thread incase someone comes up with a better idea. Thanks!

I was thinking of doing something similar, but instead of a motion switch I was going to use a regular momentary push button and mount it somehow on the side square tubes where the tailgate slams up against. but instead i just mounted a switch on a handy box extension cover that only goes on when the head parking lights are on. (just incase I left it on the lights would shut it off) hope this helps

Mount a normally closed momentary switch in one of the corners of your bed, inline with the lights. Mercury switches and the like are extremely susceptible to closing due to vibration, this will obviously result in whatever is connected to them turning on and off on their own.

I spent a good portion of yesterday trying to find a mercury/ motion switch to no avail. I went to a couple of the local salvage yards, trying to find a hood or trunk switch, only to find out that they remove these from the vehicles because they're HAZMAT

I need to do some more digging, and head scratching. I think I'm going to go with a normally closed momentary push button like has been suggested. I'm gonna mount it near the front of the bed, with some sort of plate to act as a backing for the button. I'm just not sure how I'm going to do it at this point.

Add to the fact that I've been working close to 12 hrs a day, every day, and it's been near triple digits on temp. Somehow I don't see myself lying inside an oven while trying to figure out and wire up some lights.

Once I figure everything out, I'm likely to put this project on hold until things cool off a little bit

Dei also sells a tilt switch #8613, you can find it for $8 on ebay.

You could also use a 1999 Chevy 1500 door switch, the interior lights go out when the door is closed

I believe you could also find something at one of the larger truck stops, like a TA or Pilot Flying J, back in the Truckers area
