I can get the individual shocks online for roughly $100. Is there a special kit to install or is it just a swap of shocks and struts? I'm obviously not extremely mechanically inclined, but am definitely not looking forward to a $2000 bill. Which "kit" or strut/shock do I need to level out nearly 2 inches up on the front?
It's just a swap. So they are hosing you for sure.

Yet another red flag for the dealer.... As I recall, he was looking through a printed catalog to find the $2000 kit labeled for the TRX model. It would probably still work, however, I mentally questioned the reliability of his information.

This forum has saved me a bundle before, and it looks like it has yet again.

Thanks!

Funny thing is my truck is at the dealer getting lifted (doing it there to keep warranty)
I brought the Bilsteins there and they didn't know what it was.
I laughed and gave them a brief education from the little I have gathered doing some research.

They are one of the few dealers that do lifts. but its funny how they don't know much other than Pro Comp is the way to go.

I had to find them a vendor and help them get a vendor agreement so that I can get Rough Country for a lift vs Pro Comp

But they did give me the run around that they would not honor the warranty if anything failed....
so I had to do alittle bit of leg work. Now others can benefit

Sorry for the delay, I thought I was subscribed to the thread. I went to Ft Story (Little Creek VA) and just used the standard impact tools and a lift.

I am not mechanically incompetent but im not a total grease monkey either and, got to the shop when they opened at 9 on the lift by 10 and had it to Tread Quarters for alignment by 3. In my posession after a shower and change on my way to hooters for beers at 6.

The rears I did without removing anything, just using a floor jack in teh driveway, but using a wrench doesnt tighten them enough, I got rattle. While in the shop i popped off the inner fenders to get clearance on the nuts and hit them w/ the impact and it went away.

On the front, I took the nuts off the Steering control and and sway bar, but put the nut back on to keep everything in place. I had <5500 miles on it so my ball joint just slid right off. after that, 3 nuts and one bolt/nut and the strut was out. Used a hand type compressor on the spring and whammy. Put it back in, hit it all with an impact... drove around the block on gravel in 4hi, then rehit it all with the impact again. it was actually real easy IF you have access to the right tools and can pay attention to detail.. i.e. not forget to tighten something important like a ball joint or steering arm.

IRT to the "dealer kits"... if you are referring to the MOPAR 2" lift kit, thats the one thats gonona run 1500-2000 insalled. I downloaded the book and can get the number to make sure we are all on the same page, but the one that was discontinued was the leveling kit, the spacers. You used to be able to go in and have the blocks put on your struts to get leveled out, now you cant (read shouldnt) be able to get them from a dealer since they are not offered in the MOPAR catalog.

The 2" lift is offered, and yes its a little over priced, but it depends on what you are looking for. Its actually gonna hike you up a bit more than just using Bilstein 5100s, becuase the MOPAR kit is 4 Bilstein 5100s, 2 rear progressive rate coils made by another company, (I want to say superlift) as well as some upper and lower travel stops you bolt on and the required hardware and acessories to relocate your brake lines.

Sure the stops and the relocation are a good thing to have, and to cover their backside is why the dealer wants them on a factory offered kit, but i called around a LOT and they are not required.

Ovbiously you can get the 5100s everywhere, and I looked and the progressive rate coils (SUP140) can be bought at a few webistes for under $160. The 5100s wont hike up your back end, the coils will, and I went 2.1 on my 5100s and have about 1" of rake. I have read that 2.8 setting on a stock 1500 leaves you nose high. teh MOPAR kit has the 5100s and the 2 rear coils so you raise the front and back, making it more of a true lift. if you go 5100s alone, you level out, and the bed feels stiffer, more like a tuck but wont come up.

Nice job on the install! Oceana and Little creek are always busy tho. Just FYI, I do all my work at NNSY. Never busy there and the guys are laid back and knowledgable if you need help!

So do we get to see some pics or just read about it

So when you order these shocks, all you get is the shock right? I read somewhere on this forum that you also get a upgraded strut. Is this true? Maybe someone can give me a part number for the front and rear for a 2010 Ram 4x4

What is the life expectancy of the 5100's if the stock struts are only 40K miles? I went with a leveling spacer and ride is the same as stock. I didn't want to blow out the 5100's before I had enough money to lift the truck.
Leveling spacers are a waste of money if your plans include a lift kit. Most lifts for the 4th gen 4x4 include a spacer of some sort and you would be better off with 5100's if that is the case.

I plan to run the leveling kit until I can afford 37's, 5100's and a 6" lift. By that point though I will have close to 100k miles and ready for new struts and tires, again
