Well, it's happening, my Ram is starting to show her age. She's getting tired, and in need of some attention. So after some thought and price checking of new/newer trucks, I've decided to keep my Ram and do some upgrades.

A brief history, 167,000 + miles on the clock, 99.9% bone stocker, CAI is the only upgrade/mod to date, other than that it's been just standard maintenance and repairs.

What I plan on doing is an extensive "going over" of the Ram, compiling a detailed list of repair Needs and Wants as well as Mods.

I've been trying to educate myself on this as well as a few other sites and reading. I am by NO means a mechanic, and as much as I'd like to just dive into this, i need to pace myself, between the learning curve and funding it's somewhat of a long term project.

Now, as I am in the midst of compiling this info, I want to start gathering parts for a turnkey engine to drop in, hopfully I am able to get engine together completey prior to any drastic problems with existing motor. She's just getting tired, no real issues at the moment, but I understand it wont last forever.

Now, enough of all that, I am asking for assistance, I would appreciate input on how you guys figure I should tackle this, and I've started a list of mods/upgrades to have done. Feedback please.

I might avoid electric fans. I did this with my 4 cyl s10 there great if you don't want to use a\c in the city or traffic. And you like worrying if relay has melted. Don't be fooled stickers and fuzzy dice will make it a beast on the track! (Lol) but the rest sounds cool.

If I were going to change the engine, I wouldn't go back with a 5.2. Mopar makes crate engines, or I might try to find a 5.9 to have rebuilt, everyone I know with the 5.9L gets about 5mpg more than I do with the same setup.

I'm thinking about a full rebuild for my 95 Ram some day too. I'd like to keep it in the family. What I would like to research is finding a slightly used 3rd Gen Hemi and dropping it in. Not sure if would be possible or cost effective but it would be cool. Or a Pro-charger would be way easier.

These old "LA" engines are a beast and will last you. With that kind of mileage, I wouldn't worry about dropping in an engine. Do a good clean out with Seafoam. Slap a new timing chain and a full tune up and she will still run like a new truck. I have 171k on my 360 motor and it's still solid, great pick up.

I have been told to do the Seafoam by a few people now...I generally avoid these type of products. I felt they're all "snake oil" type of things. But I started doing a little research on the Seafoam, seems many people are very pleased with the results, thanks for the heads up.

I went and re-geared my R&P to 4.10's...What a difference!

Drives much nicer and without all of that "hunting" that seems to be prevelant with the 3.55's and our trans/od gearing.

Good choice on the gears...Rep added for you!

I'm not a fan of seafoam in the oil. If you change oil regularly (and I know the OP does) you won't need it.

The engine has a lot of miles to be adding mods, but the SCT tuner is a good choice. I've left a testimonial on hemifevers' facebook page. Sean also recommends the 1.7 rockers. Dyno runs show impressive gains without a tune.

I may try electric fans next. I'm about tired of the mechanical clutch fan and the constant replacing.

Default A Few Photos

Figured I should post a few photos.

R&P Gearing;

SCT Tuner;

Used Engine, Bought for Parts;

LongBlock, Ready to Be Prepped;

As you can see, there is some surface rust forming on areas of the new engine...I need to get some better lighting and take better photos, but, if you guys could lead me down the right road to take care of this.

Wipe down the rust with some pb vlaster, clean that off with brakekleen or similar and paint the darn thing!

BTW, I'm wondering if you kept the stock valve covers off your parts engine. I am looking for a set for a project...if you'd be looking to sell and the price is right. No hurry.

Not bad on the re-man engine. But for about the same price, you could have gotten Blueprint Engine's 408 (machined 360) thats rated at 375HP and 460 lb-ft for $580 more.
