Default Exhaust Cut Out? yes or no?

first off, hey everyone. im new to this forum and auto in general. i just recently got my license, im only 17, and purchased a 2nd gen ram. My families always loved dodge and i've loved their trucks, especially the second gen. I've been modding my truck ever since i bought it. it's all been exterior and audio (besides front shocks) so i have some questions on my first performance mod.

i love a loud truck. i want a nice loud exhaust but dont want to spend the money on a complete new one or have it constantly on. there will be times where i cant have a loud exhaust.

i've been reading on these electric cut out exhausts and was hoping for some more info.

1. my truck is stock- will installing a cut out ruin my performance without other mods?

2. what did you guys spend on yours?

3. is it worth it? pros and cons?

4. how will my mpg be effected, if at all?

any other general info will be aprecited as i am still not entirely sure what these things are, where they go, etc.

keep in mind im not looking for any performance advantages, just loudness. but i don't want to lose any performance at the same time.

i apologize ahead a time if this is in the wrong section or any of what i just said didnt make any sense. I'm new, cut me a break.

Thanks in advance

Hey Benfica619,

First off welcome to the forum, there a lot of knowledgeable people on here so feel free to ask. You can share knowledge and learn a lot on here.

Now to your questions.

1. As far as mine knowledge goes, it will not harm your performance. In fact it will help performance, it will help the engine breath easier. Make sure it is after the cats, otherwise you will get a check engine light.

2. Prices I don't know, but you get what you pay for.

3. Depends on what you thing is worth it. As for pro's and con's, it will get you what you want. A loud exhaust at times you want it and a stock sound at time you need it.

4. MPG wise, I can only think of an increase. But not a noticeable one.

If it is legal depends on the state, I know for sure you will pass state inspections in Texas. IMO they are a joke. as long if you have your cut out closed for the state inspection, it will have to pass because it is the closed circuit of the exhaust system so the exhaust fumes out put would be normal. if it doesn't pass it will be a different reason other than the exhaust/cut out

i don't know about your state

out here in california, it is illegal, but unless a policeman hears it, they would not know that you have it.
Smog inspections are done every 2 years & a Modified exhaust would not pass the visual part of the smog inspection.
Out here we have some Mods that are illegal, but many people just remove the Mod & put the stock equipment back on for the Smog Inspection
I was already told that the Catch Can is illegal out here, but just before the Smog check, i will put the factory equipment back on, i still have it. Then after it passes, the Catch Can will be put back on

thanks again, i guess i'll have to read up on mass laws adreesing the subject

i have read topics that have stated it can mess with your back pressure? what is that? it also says how a truck will be releasing more air that it's taking in causing it to run horrible, lose hp and mpg. is there truth to this?

will it be louder before or after the cat? when will i be messing with the 02 sensors?

If you would do it after the cat, it will take away problems with back pressure. That it would cause the engine run bad and will lose HP and MPG, I haven't heard before. It is actually quite the opposite, it will help your engine to breath easier. The reason why sports cars have more and bigger exhaust pipes, is for the fact it will help to make the engine breath easier. The energy that the engine produces also needs a way out, thats why four bangers can have a small exhaust and a lambo or Aston(with more HP's) have multiple and bigger pipes. If you would put a smaller pipe on a Lambo or an Asaton you make it more difficult for the engine to breath and it will lose preformance. So incase for your truck, it will be easier to breath with the valves open and gain a couple of HP

I have a summit cutout in s/s. Not electric .
And I have never put the plate on its always open.
It's sounds great with the 5.9.
