Default Battery to starter cable came loose. Where does it go?

My truck won't start. The solenoid clicks, but the starter doesn't turn. I checked the battery cables, and one of the wires attached to the negative terminal is just dangling. I assume it must be from the starter, but I can't see where it goes.

This is what I'm looking at:

your negative cable should go to frame or block. Just look around where it could make contact (that is if it's still in one piece and didn't rot off in the middle of the line). your starter is grounded by being bolted into the truck. Atleast thats how all the chevys and fords I've worked on went, This is my first dodge, good luck!

There are two power wires that go to the starter. The main wire is the power supply. the smaller wire is the trigger wire.

When the key is turned power goes to the trigger wire to open the circuit in the solenoid engaging the starter to start the truck.

The smaller negative wire may go to the relay box under the hood.

However I'm at a loss as to why you would post a picture of the starter and not the errant wire. I'd think that if it came off the negative terminal you would just re-attach it to the negative terminal on the battery.

Alternatively, there should be a ground going to both the body of the truck, and one to the engine block. There should also be a negative ground on the back passenger's side of the engine to the firewall (a secondary ground).

You can take a pair of jumper cables to check that the engine is grounded by placing the negative clamp on the negative terminal of the battery and the opposite negative clamp to the engine (bracket whatever). Then try starting it. If it does start then you'll need to create a permanent ground as the others have failed.

The clicking actually sounds like the starter may have gone bad. You can jump the starter by using a remote starter button on the two wires going to the starter or by using a screwdriver to arc the two connections on the starter.
