Question Oxygen sensor count?

My '98 5.2L with 140k+ on the clock intermittently has the Engine light 'on'.
A scan said a bad oxygen sensor was the cause.
I'm not surprised, as I replaced a choked Cat about 6 months ago.
This helped MPG's but didn't do as much as I would have liked.
It hesitates on acceleration, and the A/C cuts out under load, all signs to support the bad sensor.

How ever, the new guy at my local shop started out with "it has two sensors, one for each bank", and on a subsequent visit claimed 4 sensors "an upstream and a downstream on each bank".
This is sounding fishy to me, as the number one question here when doing a true dual exhaust, is how to deal with the single oxygen sensor when you have two separate pipes all the way through.

So, how many oxygen sensors really exist on a '98 5.2L?
