Default Truck wont start in park but will in neutral?

hey guys. just askin for some more advice here.

every once in a while my ram wont start in park. as in i still have power to everything when i turn the key (like my radio and windows) but it wont make a single noise. it wont click or even attempt to turnover. literally nothing will happen.

then i noticed that when i put the truck in neutral it starts up just fine and runs just as it did before.

what is going on here/ what does it mean?

what needs to be fixed?

anyone experienced this before?

any quotes on a price to fix something like this?

Thanks ahead of time for any info

Ive had this, still do actually. when i asked about it, it was diagnosed as the shift linkage loosened up and causes the problem. someone needs to climb under the truck and loosen it, then tighten it back up while someone inside the cab keeps the shifter in park.

never fixed mine, just got used to it lol. turned into a little qwirk that keeps people from starting and taking my truck without me knowing lol

safety neutral switch is out of position, would be my first guess
otherwise it is the shift linkage

Yeah, I was going to co-sign GT's neutral safety switch. Take the two small bolts, loosen 'em and twist a little. The bolt holes are elongated to adjust it.

BUT I'm pretty sure the newer ones are just a a screw in with 3 prongs on it. Driver's side down by the pan. The shifter linkage can be adjusted so that it'll engage. (it also operates your reverse lights so if they're not working...just change it).

Careful with that. i put a dakota from the used lot through a $7k snap-on box with that issue. It wasnt really in neutral and the parking brake cable got hung up so it felt like it was engaged when it wasnt even connected. hopped out to check the trans fluid and BAM! thank God the shop insurance covered it.
