Default How can I boost my MPG on a 97 5.9L ?

I am getting really crappy mpg's at 10 or 11 mpg, around 200 miles out of a tank of gas ( normally $90 to fill ) which is B.S. in my opinion. I have done a tune up, clean air filter, oil changes, cleaner in fuel..ect... Will a cold air intake help any...Ive heard both ways yes and no...so dont want to waste any more money. Thanks for any input on this subject.

sounds like a normal 5.9L to me, one reason why we don't have the 5.2L anymore. doing regular tune ups helps alot, you could probably change fuel sync and timing to help but that's not practical unless you have the tools for it. there isn't much that can be done, try being light on the gas pedal mostly, try to avoid city driving, it you need to go someplace take the highway not the country side.

12 MPG is really bad, my 5.2L was getting around 12 MPG when I was towing my 32' travel trailer (I was shocked at how good MPG based on situation).

The overall improvement you could make is really to have a fuel saver program.

Probably also time for a round of O2 sensors and I'd bet the intake plenum gasket is leaking.

Default Try these...

Open up the exhaust. Mine had a tiny factory exhaust and when the catalitc converter died, I re plumbed it with 2 1/2 pipe, high flow converter and a magnaflo muffler. Same time I added a K&N intake. Not so much for the cold air but the larger and much easier to get to filter element. Full tune up, plugs, wires cap and rotor and last but maybe not least, 1 full can in a half tank of gas every six months of BK44G. Let the tank get pretty low before you fill up again. My results were this....11.4 MPG empty to 17.3 on this last tank. Towing my 27' trailer here in Colorado I went from ~7 MPG to 12.5 and a whole lot more HP in the mountains. I've got 163xxx on it today. \
Good Luck....

I feel you bro. Been looking into a 2500 24v cummins. Seems as if its a better choice.

Sonactivo has since traded his Ram on a PT cruiser. He had to do what was right for him/his family. That said, if you have a 5.9L and you are looking for mileage improvements, you might as well stop. I have never seen one hit 20mpg in the 10+years I have been around Mopars. Sad, but true. The 360 is a beast of a motor, and it drinks fuel like it is one.

I agree that the 5.9's tend to drink gas, but there are many things that can be done to improve the mpg. I have a Dak R/T that averages 18-19mpg back and forth to work. It's a combination of stop-n-go and some highway driving. My biggest improvement came with the SCT tune.....I got +2 mpg. Then 2nd item that I rank as the best bang for the buck is a Ram Air Kit. Not a huge mpg increase, but every little bit helps. Lastly, my advice to him would be to replace his O2 sensors and get a good hi-flow cat.

For reference, my 95 Ram (2wd) with a 360 averaged 14.5 back and forth to work. I think the 12 he was seeing was reasonable considering he was a 4x4.
