I was really expecting a nice growl as most CAI's do and honestly I don't hear a thing except at wide open throttle....and I really don't drive my truck like that on a regular basis.
It looks awesome, but for what were paying looks just aren't enough.
This isn't an install you could screw up. Nothing wrong could cause it to be so quiet. The main intake boot was a bit short as I've seen mentioned before and I really had to work at it to make sure the piping was mated together far enough. Basically, you better hope those hose clamps never back off or there's going to be separation.
Anyway, the fitment isn't the biggest issue, I'm just pretty let down that it's so quiet. I was kinda looking forward to that awesome growl.

The one thing I'm wondering if it's quiet mainly because the filter is basically still enclosed behind the lid which would quiet it down. I may remove the clear cover for a short run and see if that changes the tone....if it does then I'll know that's the reason and I'll have to decide what I want to do.

Anyone have any valuable input into what I've experienced? I certainly was convinced I made the better choice by choosing S&B.
You were seriously expecting a loud, audible growl under regular driving conditions and not only [just] at WOT?

If that's the sole reason for purchasing the K&N, you'll be sadly disappointed.

Fair points. Part of my issue here is reading a lot of posts on these forums where people installed the S&B and came back here raving how amazing it sounded. It sets people (who spend a lot of time researching) up for a pretty unfair expectation.
We'll see if it actually feels much different performance wise. I understand both sides of the CAI argument. It's pretty simple logic.
But honestly, if there's not alot of difference in how things feel performance wise and I don't at least get a nice growl, then whats the point.

Don't blame the people raving about their S&B CAI for your assumptions.

Nobody has ever posted the S&B growls under anything but WOT.

It's an 'unfair expectation' only when the information is fabricated; it's not.

Well maybe i was wrong too!!

Grub, what would you suggest then, i just want that nice cai sound, a lifetime filter and that little bit of performance will be a plus for me, i know once i get a tuner(if my silverado will stop breaking!!) it will help tie everything together.

P.s.-if i spread some false info my bad!! I just made my decision from gathering previous threads about the 2 styles of intakes.

You're not gonna' find a CAI that will 'growl' under normal driving. Not in an enclosed box, open box, oiled filter, dry filter, S&B or any other brand. There isn't enough forced air [induction] or velocity created to produce and transmit that 'growl' you yearn.

It's not where they excell or they're suppose to.

Save your money.

I knew none of them would, i was just sayin the louder of the bunch have seemed to be the ones with just a heatshield and rubber seal, vs a enclosed set up, am i correct?

The Airaid I had in my last truck was definitely louder under any amount of load. But honestly it was kind of annoying. It resonated a lot and really bugged me at times. Especially around 2000 rpm. I was even contemplating taking it out. So if you want noise Airaid might be a good option, but I personally don't think it's worth the money.

Yes, all things equal, unboxed [non-enclosed] and unrestricted filter [mouth] will give you more noise under throttle.......but not much else. As many have said on these boards, noise rarely, if ever, equates to performance.

Have you unscrewed the plexiglass cover of your S&B - thereby exposing the filter's mouth- to see what it sounds like? It kind of defeats the whole assembly's purpose, but that seems to be the least of your concerns.

Yeah I've read a lot about how the Airaid produce a lot of noise under WOT so that may be the route you're looking for.

Good luck.
