Default 2003 2500 Hemi need more towing power

We have a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 quad cab 4x4 Hemi automatic 3.73. The truck just turned 60k miles and extremely well maintained. Towing 5500 lbs the truck struggles, on hills it's in 2nd gear and on long steep hills will shift between 1st and 2nd and be down to 35 mph.. I am looking for advice on how to improve the towing performance. I have towed for a long time including large 5th wheels with diesels and have down sized to this set up due to economy, however am disappointed with the truck and only 5500lbs. I am not usually a fan of programmers or performance chips but do want better towing results. I dont want to blow money on bolt on stuff that doesn't really help so thought this would be the place to come ask Hemi advice. Any advice appreciated, thanks....

First thing I would do is swap out to 4.56 gears. This will be pricey for you since you have to do front and back, but this will give you the best immediate results. A Superchips 3815 (pretty cheap used) will help alot as well. A better exhaust system wouldn't hurt either, but if you don't intend to really get into it then it's not that necessary. Personally, I think a 3/4 ton should have a bigger engine, I'd stroke it out to a 392, then you'll definitely get torque (but that's even more $$ than the gears).
