Question Rear gear ratio

Hi,
How do I figure out what gear ratio I have in my truck?? I have the original window sticker, but it just lists "Trailer Tow Prep Group": 750 amp battery, Class IV hitch and 7 pin wiring. Nothing about axle ratio.

Well, one way is to get your rear wheels off the ground, make a brightly colored mark on your driveshaft, and then slowly rotate your rear tire one full turn while counting how many times your driveshaft rotates, whether it be 3.5 times, 3.75 times, almost 4 times, or just a bit over 4 times, you will be close to figuring out what you could have for a rear gear.

Look in your glovebox and see if the options sticker is still there.

Drive at 60 mph and record the rpm. Then go online and use one of the gear ratio calculators to figure it out. like this one.

What do most of you, those that know, have in your trucks? I have the tow package with factory class IV hitch, 4x4 Laramie Edition

Look up your VIN number or check the glove box for a stick.

My truck has a tag attached around the axle near the passenger side that tells the gear ratio. It says "3.92 open". If that isn't present on your truck, the simplest way would be to go to this website and obtain your build sheet. Click on "Equipment Listing" on the left and then enter your VIN....poof, instant build sheet with all your truck's options and features. Mine has "3.92 rear gear" listed under "options". Your's should either say that or 3.55. If by some chance it doesn't list the ratio, I think it's a safe bet you have the 3.55 because as stated above, the 3.92 was an option and the 3.55 was standard.

Some people also have the 3.21 ratio, most of those didn't want it
Ram R/T has 4.11 gear mostly

Angry

Well, NO tag and I pulled the build sheet= no ratio listed. My build sheet lists class IV hitch, heavy duty cooling, heavy duty trans cooler, heavy duty tow package..........but no indication of gear ratio. Frustrating.

Hmmmm, I would have thought it would have listed it either way. I still say it's a very safe bet to assume that if it doesn't have 3.92 listed, it has the 3.55. But I know you would rather know for certain. You could always try calling a dealer and let them pull your VIN. I don't know if they have access to anything more than what comes on the build sheet or not. I called my local dealer once and provided a VIN and asked if the truck was equipped with the limited slip differential and she said "I'm not sure....it only says anti-slip here so I don't really know."
