2010 1500 sport 3.55 gears, open diff, pinion nut backed off around 18,000km and i had a slight whine, Dodge tightened it, but clearly not properly, and then at about 27,000km the whine started again, and got really bad, really fast, it was crazy loud! Anyway another dealer replaced only the bearings, road tested it then realised the gears were flat spotted, so they re-rebuilt it with all new components again, i was without the truck for a week and a half. Its really sad to know im not the only person with this problem!

Hmmm . . . it does appear to be a design error -- wonder what the odds are of forcing a recall for all the models with that rear end?

I'd think it would be quite an undertaking, just from the fact that all the diesel models 1998.5 thru 2001 came with an injector pump that WILL fail @ some point in time & there never was a recall on those. I've had 3 of 'em fail, Bosch finally came out with an upgrade for Freightliner "Sprinter" vans (sold by Dodge & Mercedes too) that use the same pump & I recently got the best version that $$$ can buy ($2150) so I should never have the problem again, but although the dealer replaced the 1st one under warranty, I had to buy the next 2 :-(

Maybe someone can use a State "Lemon Law" to attack the pinion issue.

yea, i guess this pinion nut issue is linked to the drive shafts falling off to? so we have drive shafts that fall off and rear ends that go, kinda makes me wonder wtf is going on with dodge... there should be a recall, but chances are they looked into the problem and its going to cost them to much to recall and replace diff's or w/e to fix this issue.

Pinion nut backed off 54,000km 3.92 lsd had gears and bearings all replaced. Happened really quick while on the highway heard the whine pulled over immediately. Took a week to get parts and repairs.

I heard the parts are back ordered, sorry to hear you have a such a long wait. You would think they would look toward the aftermarket to get gears for those that have been waiting. I guess I was lucky that there were gear available. I also broke down in a small town so maybe they had some just sitting there being that is was not that busy.

2010 Big Horn CC here - 3.55 gears - my pinion seal was leaking at 66k miles, but no pinion nut failure. It was probably leaking slightly before this but I failed to notice it as it was more or less seeping - not leaking enough to cause spots on my driveway.

I guess my question is - let's say you had a failure where the nut backed off, and they replaced everything - wouldn't it just happen again if it's a design issue? Or was it more of a manufacturing process issue where these weren't tightened down properly?

Or would Chrysler replace with different components?
