Default wanting to put new tires on

I have a dodge ram 1500 quad 4x4 its a 2004. I am running on BF Goodrich T/A KO all terrain tires the tire size is 285 55R20. I am trying to figure out what a good tire would be that would be a little "beefier" on the tread. I seem to be having some trouble finding the right size. I believe that the R20 has to remain the same when looking but not sure how important the other 2 numbers are to remain the same. If someone has a good tire they are running on that is bigger than the All terrain please let me know suggestions! Thank you for your time.

The first number is width in millimeters (285) which is 11.22" and the second number is aspect ratio relating the sidewall height to the width which in your case is 6.17" for an overall diameter of 32.34"
I run the same BFG AT/KO in a LT275-65-R20 which is a 34" diameter tire with a 7.04" sidewall and 10.83" width on my 2012 1500 and am very happy with them. Stock suspension, no rubbing anywhere.
If you like the width of your tire you could go with a 285-65-R20 which is a 34.5" diameter tire with 7.29" sidewalls. Without a lift this is likely the largest tire you could run and you would really have to test fit to make sure you don't rub anywhere.

I see you are relatively new...welcome to the forumz!

In case you aren't aware, the stock size tire for 20" rims is 275/60/20. So the tire you are running is a size wider (285 vs 275) but also a tad shorter (55 vs 60 aspect ratio) than what came stock on the truck. You need to remember though that the aspect ratio itself is not an indicator of the overall height or the sidewall height of the tire. You have to look at the aspect ratio and the width together. As edd5 said, your tire sidewall is 55% of 285mm....convert that to inches and you get a 6.17" tall sidewall. By comparison the stock size is 60% of 275mm....converted to inches is a 6.49" tall sidewall. You can also roughly figure the overall height of the tire by doubling the sidewall height and adding the rim diamater which will always be 20" for you. So for your current tire 6.17 x 2 + 20 = the 32.34" that edd5 already came up with. For the stock size tire 6.49 x 2 + 20 = 32.98" overall height. Hope that helps you understand what the numbers on a tire mean.

All that being said, I personally think it takes away from the looks of the truck, especially a 4x4, if you put anything shorter than the stock size on it. You could simply step up to the stock size, 275/60/20. Doesn't seem like much of a difference I know but you would be able to tell a difference by looking at it. That size is commonly available and priced pretty well. If you want even taller you could go with the 275/65/20 that edd5 is running. You would definitely notice a big difference in the appearance with that size. I personally think that is the best size for a stock suspension, stock rims Ram 4x4. That size is more expensive than the stock size but still not unreasonable. Or like he said, you could go with something even bigger like a 285/60/20 or 285/65/20. I am confident that either of those will fit your truck with no problems but your tire choice is limited and they start getting rather expensive. You could also go even bigger if you desire but you might run into rubbing issues or find yourself needing spacers if you aren't careful.

As far as an aggressive tire, the BFG KOs are great tires and they are a really blocky design but the tread is too plain for my tastes. I like Cooper Zeon LTZs, Nitto Terra Grapplers, or Toyo Open Country A/Ts if you want an all-terrain tire and Nitto Trail Grapplers or Toyo Open Country M/Ts if you want a mud tire.

Whew! That was a mouthful....good thing I can type really fast or I would never get any work done, lol. Hope we helped!
