Default Will the stock 17" rim handle 80PSI?

I am looking at upgrading my P tires to a E or 4ply to a 10ply which ever way you prefer to read it. Truck is the 1500 with hemi 4x4 quad cab with aluminium rims.

My reason for doing so I tow a TT that weighs 7000pds loaded up and its time for new tires anyway so a friend suggested I go with a set of 10ply tires and stated he finds an improvement while towing and gives you better wear and side wall protection.

With that said he has a Ram 2500 and tows a 11000pd 5ver

Am I wasting my money on a 10ply/E rated tire, am i just as well off to look at a 4ply/P rated that came factory?

Well the wheel will have no problem with 80 psi, but there are other things to consider...

First of all, just FYI(not that it matters) but they aren't actually 10 ply tires. E rating is "equivalent" to a 10 ply tire rating. I think they word it that way because they no longer make 10 ply tires.

Also, you won't want to run 80 psi in an E rated tire if you get them. You will want to run whatever psi you need to get a flat footprint on the ground. This is true with any tire, but generally an E rated tire will require somewhat more pressure to get a flat footprint. Take a piece of white chalk and draw a line across the tread then drive a few feet and see if the chalk rubbed off evenly. Adjust psi according until the tread footprint is even.

All that said, I have E rated tires on my 1500 ram with aftermarket 17" wheels and I run about 45-50 psi to get a flat footprint. No issues with this setup, although I will be going back to a P or maybe SUV or LT tire that is lighter once these are worn out. I just don't need the E rating, they are great tires and I have no issues but it's a lot of rotational mass. Granted I still get great mpg and it accelerates fine but like I said I don't tow so I just don't need them. And if I ever do tow it's a few thousand lbs max.

Oh I will say that the E rated tires are extremely tough. My wife has curbed them a few times and other than a light, faint mark on the sidewall you'd never even know. I've also pulled a screw out of the tread that was like 1" long, and amazingly it didn't puncture through, so no leak. They are wearing very good too(I think I have like 20k miles on them and they look brand new). They are cooper zeon ltz's. You can definitely tell they are stiffer as well, which I like.
