Default New Air Filter...Gas Mileage plummets...WTF?

Tinkering around the RAM over the weekend....decided to check the air filter and it looked like it was the original air filter, 2 years old and 60,000 miles on it.
So I went to Advance Auto and bought a replacement ; Purolator Gold - around $26.00.
I was averaging around 18.5 MPG before I replaced the filter. I thought for sure with more air getting to the motor the MPG would increase...
I was dead wrong...I am now averaging about 15.2 MPG.
If the trash hadn't been picked up on Monday I swear I would dig the old one out and put it back in.

Any ideas why the MPG would drop? Is Purolator NOT a good filter?

Probably other reasons such as driving routes(city, idling vs highway) or driving habits.

Did you disconnect the AirTempSensor by mistake when changing the air filter? Give it time, your mpg will improve with a new filter.

Your truck is in shock from the sudden maintenance. Wait till you change the oil.

There's no such thing as a Purolator Gold Air Filter.

There's the Purolator Classic Air Filter, the Purolator PureOne Air Filter and the [new] Purolator Synthetic Air Filter.

Are you peaking of the Napa Gold Air Filter?

Which Purolator are you speaking of?

As for Purolator filter's quality, the below graph may surprise you and some others.

Sorry...you're right.
It's not a Purolator " Gold " filter.
It's a Purolator " Pure One" filter.
It just happened to be in a gold box.

If I'm reading this graph properly, My K&N does not hold much dirt?

K&N's are junk. People still sware by them but they let large amounts of dirt in your engine causing premature engine wear.

This is like an oil brand debate, I wish there was a real scientific bench test of filtration effectiveness/flow/capacity! I fear you are correct about K&N though!

I do KNOW that a Uni filter does an excellent job of filtration: That is what I use in all my offroad toys and have seen that the intake is perfectly clean after a week in the sand dunes. I mean, white glove clean and that's impressive in that fine sand dust
