Default New to me truck w/ weird rear end clunk

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum with a new to me 2004 5.7 4x4 with stock LSD.

I have been hearing a clunk coming from somewhere in the rear end when I turn or sometimes when Im going below 10-15ish mph. Anything past that and I can't hear it with the 35s so Im not sure if it continues lol. No grinds or whines, just a clunk every now and then. Sometimes it happens 4 or 5 times during a low speed turn, sometimes it only does it once, or not at all. It's been getting a tad more frequent since the day I bought the truck. Any ideas before I go pay monies so that someone can just look at it and say nothing is wrong? I got a guy at work saying it's some "clips in the diff" and another saying it's the u-joints, but they are not the most reliable sources... Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. sorry if this is the wrong board.

I would think you would have noticed a popping noise when shifting between park, reverse, and drive if it were the u-joints.

I'm no mechanic so I can't diagnose your issue but I can tell you this much from research I did when I had my 2006 with the LSD.....unfortunately a lot of the third gen trucks with LSD are prone to the c-clip issues. My understanding is that the clips hold the entire gearset/differential unit in place. They have a tendency to fall out of place or break which lets the gearset move around inside the carrier. The clips themselves can end up in the bottom of the housing and you might not know there is a problem until it's too late. I wouldn't say it's a regular occurance or anything but I have read a couple of stories about guys not knowing anything was wrong until their rear diff locked up while going down the road. You can imagine what that could lead to. The ones that have gone this far normally require replacement of the entire rear end, housing and all, because the moving gearset wears and does damage to the inside of the housing.

I don't mean to scare you and I certainly am not saying this is your problem but it is a known issue with the third gen LSD trucks. I would go ahead and have someone who knows what they are looking at pull the rear diff cover and take a look. Even if they don't find anything wrong, you will have peace of mind and they can flush and refill the rear diff with fresh fluid and the LSD additive. That should probably be done on the truck anyway if you recently bought it and don't know if it has ever been done. There is no drain plug so that diff cover has to come off to drain the old fluid. Let us know what happens please.

Did you check to see if the spare tire is tight? Mine was loose when I first bought my truck (2 weeks ago) and I heard the same and checked the spare and sure enough it was just swinging in the breeze under there.
