Default Changed oil...just spewed it everywhere

Help! My first oil change @ 1200 miles...put in Amsoil XL 5w-20 and a royal purple oil filter, the same way I've been changing oil for years.

When I started up oil was spewing out underneath the front of the engine compartment and the fan whipping it every which way...any idea what went wrong, what I can look for? Or should I go straight to the dealer. I don't see where it came from

After checking the oil looks like there's nothing left I put in 6 quarts and was in the safe section

Did you make sure the gasket came off with the old one? Did you lube the new one so it wouldn't wrinkle up upon contacting the mount?

i don't know
but it sounds like the original oil filter gasket was still on the engine
i have heard of similar things happening, when double gasketing occurred

Likely from the filter gasket. Did the old gasket come off cleanly? New one seated properly? Correct filter?

like Miami said...check out the old filter you removed and see if the gasket came off. if it stuck to the engine block then you double gasketed your new filter. this happened to me a couple years ago during my first oil change. the factory really spins them filters on tight.

Josh, don't feel bad bro if you double gasketed the new filter.

A few years back, I had just changed the oil in my new (5000 miles) truck. My 4 y/o daughter was sitting on the steps watching. I started the truck, and just before throwing it in reverse to back it out of the garage, I hear the worst sound ever. Oh my, the look on my daughter's face. She walks towards me explaining how it was, "raining", under my truck! No kidding, at least 5 of the 7 qts were either on my garage floor, or dripping from my truck. I was pissed to say the least....went looking for the smallest man in my town to kick his butt.

I don't pretent to be the world's best mechanic, but I have rebuilt engines, removed and replaced engines, etc., and probably done about 100 oil changes in my life with nothing like that ever happening. I was so dang embarrassed. Had to phone a friend to pick up a bag of speedy dry, 7 qts of oil and a new filter for me!

One of those things that only happens once!

I did the samething on my first oil change.

You have to double check the original filter gasket came off....second you have to make sure the new filter gasket is tight on the filter. The mopar filter I was putting back on had a loose gasket that made it pinch when I installed it and that caused the spray. Third I bought a good filter wrench that attaches to a socket and really snugged the filter.

After all that mine didn't spew everywhere. I lost about 2.5qts on start up after the first oil change.

That's a big opps for sure. Your just lucky it started leaking right away and not while driving down the highway, When I did my first change the factory filters gasket stayed on the engine however since I had read of this problem happening I was ready for it. At least you didn't loose your engine.
