The exact thing happened to me many years back too.

Now I always check the old AND new filter prior to installation.

Live-n-learn brother.

Like I said in another post, I am a marine mechanic and change the oil on 150 engines yearly. Sometimes the engines have run 200 hours for the season, and sometimes maybe they have as little as 10! In every case, and with every filter, I have seen the dreaded "gasket stick" at one time or another. ALWAYS check that oil filter for the gasket when you remove it!!!!! It will make your life easier, I promise.

All was good in round 2 gentlemen, thank you. It's amazing how fast your truck can blow out 6 quarts of oil.

I know what I'll being doing next weekend...spraying every inch of the compartment down with cleaner.

If you will get in the habit of matching the old filter with the new, gasket to gasket, you will notice then if the old gasket is not there, and you will get your new gasket lubed at the same time.

Dont look at it as a mistake...look at it as " I was checking to make sure my engine has good oil pressure and flow!"

LOL

I say if you get in the habit of wiping the filter seat after it drains completely it will prevent you from missing things like stuck seals and damaged seats. I like to do that to be able to inspect the seat. I teach this at work to the new guys mainly because most of the new guys we get today are really SLOW! This is the type of mistake the rarely gets made twice.

When I was in high school many moons ago, I worked at a quick lube shop. I can't remember how many times that happened...!

I always take a paper towel and wipe off the oil filter housing and at the same time am verifying the old gasket is not stuck on the housing. This makes sure the filter has a nice clean area to seal against.

If you put a thin film of oil on the new oil filter gasket, it won't stick on the next oil change.

Haven't had a filter blow out yet... fingers crossed I just didn't curse myself.
