Default Size! Size! Size! Please help newbie

Hello everyone. ill start off by saying i have never modded a vehicle before. so here goes. i just bought a 2012 ram express 5.7 4x2 and want a custom exhaust. i have searched thru all these forums and magna 14 and 18 sound best to me. buttt i have some concerns. i have read that a new y pipe is necessary and will help with performance and sound bc its maid for that muffler. also read that there is no need to exchange the y pipe on such a new truck. so i dont know what to do there. also i have read that i need a 3'' in and 2.25" and also read that i need a 2.5" out. so also i dont know which one. i would very much appreciate it if someone can tell me exactly what i need. and possible part numbers too. that would be great. i will make a video after it is installed to show those interested. thanks!

Welcome to the family. I own a 2012 Ram 1500 Sport 5.7 I think engine/exhaust specs are identical. If your truck has dual tips then you need a 3" in and (2.25"X2) out muffler for stock fitment. Lots of good mufflers out there but I like the Magnaflow 18 " part number 12278 (satin exterior). As for the Y Pipe, it's again a Magnaflow Y pipe part 10778. Both are full stainless steel and that's important. If you crawl under your truck like I did, you wont believe your eyes when you see the stock Y set up. It's a disgrace and I think if you check it out you'll want a proper Y install aswell. There is a muffler kit from mufflex-performance.com its more expensive than just getting the muffler <<BUT>> it has stainless steel mandrel bent extensions which you won't get at a regular muffler shop. (keeping everything stainless steel I think is important) I have decided to go the Mufflex route choosing the 18" magnaflow and the part for this is DOD18M. The stock muffler is a friggen log and you will need some piping to fill the gap with a new muffler. There is a lot of talk lately that Mufflex is potentially building a Y kit aswell . I waiting for more news on that. Good luck

the stock exhaust for our trucks go from 2.5 off the engine then 3 inch to the muffler than 2.25 after the muffler. I have the magnaflow y-pipe and the 18" mufflex muffler I love how it sounded in the beginning now I want it louder. The throttle response is amazing. Just waiting for a tuner now.

thanks for the input guys! ive heard a lot of people say they wish they went with 14" instead of 18". how much louder is the 14? i like a loud rumble that grabs attention but i dont want to be wakin up neighbors, or having to crank my radio when driving to drown it out ya know. also, im getting the S&B CAI installed so will that help the sound of the 18" muffler?

I am also getting the S@B intake. Without hearing the difference between the 18 and 14 inch muffler in real life its hard. Youtube videos sound the same to me.

Stock exhaust is dual 2.5" before the y pipe, single 3" between y pipe and muffler, and dual 2.25" tailpipes after the muffler. Some use a single 3" in/dual 2.5" out muffler and reduce it to 2.25"(doesn't really matter).

You don't "need" a new y pipe, it'll just perform a little better. Sound will barely be different if at all(at least noticeably...).

...cutouts...wake up the dead when you want, close them and drive peacefully with whatever you choose for a muffler..I went with biggest magnaflow for quiet so that I could go really loud and shock people when I open cutouts...
