Default can i swap out a 46RE for a 46RH

Ok so I know my 01 5.9 1500 ram 2wd has a 46RE well 2nd gear is gone. I have a rebuilt 46RH sitting on my garage floor can I just swap the 2 and if so what do I do about the extra speed sensor that's on the tail shaft of the 46RH?

I thought I answered this the other day? Maybe I forgot to hit Post Reply?

I'd say that if all the other connections match up up you should be okay, just don't hook anything up to where the speed sensor goes. Either that, If everything else matches up, I'd swap out the tail shaft.

The 46 re is electronic so as long as everything matches up and plugs in there shouldn't be any codes thrown with the computer, shifting etc...

I know that I had to put an ECM in my truck from an automatic for a couple days the shift light on my dash acted stupid and indicated a shift all over the place. If that's the least of your worries then the shift should just be slightly different (at different points)

It'll physically bolt it, but your truck won't know whether to crap or go blind. Only two choices. Get the appropriate computer for your truck, but for a manual transmission, or swap the hard parts (bands, clutches) between the two. Unless you're really familiar with the innards, it'd be easier to swap PCMs and wire in a toggle for overdrive or see the fully automatic actuator on PATC's website.

I dunno. Might be worth a try. Get a connector from a 46rh truck, tie 12v into it and live with a check engine light as the computer tries to find a missing transmission. I'm not sure about the linkages on your truck. I was thinking they did away with the manual linkages with the RE. You definitely need full mechanical linkage including kickdown on 46rh.

Yeah i just bought a transmission and they accidentally gave me the 46rh instead of the 46re and my truck would not shift into overdrive. i guess you have to change the pcm to get it to shift into overdrive. we tried swapping out the tail shaft but the fluid lines on the 46rh are different for the overdrive clutch pack. luckily the guy rebuilt mine and i gave him his transmission back and just drove around burning ridiculous amounts of gas stuck in 3rd gear.

In your case all you need to do is install a $2 toggle switch, connect to 12V power. Yours will shift 1-2-3 now. When you want OD, flip the switch and it'll go to 4th and lock up the converter shortly after 3rd, or you can go to PATC's website. They offer a couple solutions for seamless, full automatic operation of the OD, even adjusting the speed it engages. It's aimed at those who want to upgrade to the OD model from a 3-speed model. Standard kit is $85, deluxe is $325. Swapping PCM's wouldn't be a viable option for you.
