Default help rough running, backfire hard start

my 96 1500 5 spd 5.2 a while ago it was out of comission for a while, but I later fixed it after i fixed it it would sometimes cut out I later added some injector cleaner and it went away. Recently it started cutting out at higher rpms like it was hitting rev limiter at only about 3 grand. I later replaced the distributor cap hoping it would help. after finally getting all those wires back where they should be I started it and it idled good but when I took it for a drive it ran rough and would start dying when it got warm it would just about die and I would have to put the gas to the floor to start it. it would also start backfiring almost constantly once it got warm. Already has newer fuel pump plug wires as well as new coil distributor cap please help if you can.

Disconnect the battery, cycle the key once, reconnect the battery and DO NOT check the codes...take it for a ride and post back.

Trust me on this.

When You start it now does it crank for awhile, or does it catch and seem like it's on a few cylinders and the rest join in and it smooths out...a little?

Reach around back of the throttle body and unplug the IAC and try it to see if there's any difference. No difference, bad IAC.

You can try the same with the TPS on the driver's side.

Unplugging the IAC made very little in any difference, unplugging the TPS killed the engine. Forts starts with a lope that later evens out to a descent idle.

I'm guessing that there was no change disconnecting the IAC. When you hold the throttle open it's bypassing the IAC and letting more air in. The backfiring is most likely too much fuel either igniting in the intake, the cylinder, or the exhaust manifolds depending on where it's backfiring from...

Did it make a really cool sound when you downshifted?

Forts? Typo?

Definitely ruled out the TPS.

It should run a lot worse if you disconnected the IAC...If it didn't then I'd spring for the $40 and replace it.

When you disconnected the battery and did the power drain, it reset the ECM and put it in limp, re-learn mode. If it was a glitch it would have relearned and there's a good chance it would have straightened it out.

ya typo but I didn't notice any cool sound but I have very strait pipes that usually backfire when downshifting from high rpm. this also makes sense because when I ran the truck at low rpms lugging it along it quit backfiring as much.

You're going to lose that sound if you replace the IAC...which stinks because when mine went bad it did the same thing as yours.
