Default Maintenance Requirements

Does anyone do their own maintenance on their trucks instead of paying Dodge $600 plus for each interval? I'm pretty handy with the small stuff, but the 15K maintenance requires the 4WD to be serviced. How difficult is this?

I have been doing all my own maintenance since new. Only dealer visits have been for recalls. My maintenance schedule does not have anything related to the 4WD, only mentions to lube the front drive shaft fitting however this is only needed for the 2500/3500 4x4 models. Nothing for my 2010 1500 4x4. What does the schedule for yours say specifically ?

The service lady at the dealer said this would include servicing the 4WD, oil change (which I told her i didn't need), rotating tires, changing the air filter (didn't need), and she listed a laundry list of other checks. I've never paid that much for a service this soon.

Ok. I just called and got clarification. Here's what's included in the 15K maintenance service for $620

Oil change
Rotate and Balance Tires
Alignment
fuel injector service
Power Steering Flush
4x4 Service (front and back axles)


I know i can't do the alignment, but has anyone done their own P/S and 4x4 service?

Oil change - nobody should EVER pay to get this service performed.... period!

Tire balance and rotation - you have no choice but to pay for this service as it's not a DIY'er [though the rotation is] performed in your garage.

Alignment - see above

Fuel injector service - I'm very skeptical about this service. I've heard MANY horror stories about fuel injection services performed by shops/dealerships where they do nothing more than run a cleanser/additive [eg: Seafoam] thru the lines, but charge you a fortune for an all day job they complete in under an hour. A proper fuel injection cleaning service requires disassembling of the injectors, fuel rail system [cleaning/pressurising], throttle body, etc... So buyer beware!

Power Steering Flush - really messy procedure I've done twice, so it can easily be performed by a DIY'er. Several YouTube clips available to assist. Word-of-caution: do NOT neglect this service as many often do or it'll bite you in the ass like it did me many years ago. A service that's worth every moment of your time.

4x4 Service - never had one done, so someone with experience will hopefully chime in.

other than the oil change, i don't believe any of those services are listed in our service manuel at the 15000 mile mark.

Here are some screen shots of what your 32,000 mile checkup should entail. Remember the manual says 6,000 miles between services so that 32,000 mile number is accurate.

For the 4x4 system according to the pics above you just pull the fill plugs on all 3 and check the fluid for proper level and color.

Your axles have two plugs. One on the bottom and one a little over half way up the cover. Pull the plug on the cover and stick a finger in there if fluid doesn't come out. If your finger can reach the fluid then the level is ok. Next look at the color. A dark brown or blackish color is bad and the fluid will most likely smell burnt. If that is the case then change the fluid by pulling the bottom plug and draining all of it. Refill with whatever fluid Dodge says to use in the manual.


Transfer case is done the same way but the bottom plug may not be on the very bottom. It will be located lower on the rear face of the case iirc.

I only have my tires balanced every 15k miles. I rotate them myself and use a torque wrench since I have never seen a tech use a torque wrench on lug nuts. They run the nuts down with an impact and I hate that. As for alignment I have that done whenever I feel the truck start to pull or the steering wheel goes off center after hitting something.

I agree with the power steering flush as I have seen first hand how weak the power steering setup is on these trucks. Had a customer come in for a complete power steering replacement on his 07 Ram with 65K miles on it after the pump failed and sent metal fragments through the cooler and lines.
