Default Newbie From Al. 2500 5.9 question

New to the forum and cant find where to post this question so I'll start here. I just bought an 05 2500 QC 4wd with the 5.9 Cummins and G56 6 speed manual transmission. My question is this : My Avg Mpg (on the overhead console) after a tank of fuel is 22.5 Mpg but when I do the math it is 16.5 Mpg. It seems to consistantly be about 6 Mpg off. The truck is stock except for cold ait intake and 285 tires (from factory it had 265 tires) I guess the tires could throw everything off a little but it still doesnt make sense to me. Can this be corrected? And also in an attempt to squeeze a few more Mpg out of the truck any suggestions would be appreciated. it has 166,000 miles and I'm pretty sure the valves have never been adjusted.

Thanks in advance,
William

I would not trust the overhead console reading @ all & yes, taller tires will throw your numbers off. For example, I put 12.50 x 33 x 16.5 tires on my '98 (the day I bought it -- already had wheels/tires ordered @ a local tire store) & that threw my speedometer / odometer off almost exactly 6%.

I still have not gotten a new gear for the transmission to make the speedo / odo read right for the taller tires, but 6% is pretty easy to figure -- i.e., if I drive 100 miles on the interstate going by the mile markers (pretty accurate, actually), then my odometer will show that I've gone 94 miles. And when the speedo is showing 50 mph I know I'm actually going 53 -- the taller tires make it appear that I have not gone as far as I actually have, and that I'm going 6% slower than I actually am.

So if you intend to keep using taller-than-stock tires, take a trip of @ least 50 miles against a known mileage indicator, like the little green mile-marker signs on the interstate (which nobody other than semi-drivers & cops pay attention to) to see how far off the speedometer / odometer actually is & then figure your fuel mileage by the corrected mileage. I get 18-20 (corrected) in my '98.5 model 2500HD truck with 24-valve Cummins diesel, 4.10 gears & the big all-terrain (or mud-terrain) tires and a friend of mine with a '96 12-valve diesel Dually 6x6 gets about 21 mpg with 3.57 gears & standard size highway tires.

Of course a valve adjustment wouldn't hurt & I'd either do it myself or go to an authorized Cummins service center to have it done, not a Dodge dealership. Cummins forgot more about their engines in Dodge pickups than Dodge dealers will ever know!

Then there are other things you can do like make or get a free-flowing exhaust system (yours may have a catalytic converter but mine does not), a K&N air filter (I just got one for the stock airbox) & there are several "tuners" on the market which will modify the fuel injection system (electronically) to give you more power, better mileage, or both, depending on the setting & how you drive.

Also remember where your torque band is -- 1700-2700 rpm, stay in it all the time & the lower the rpm the better. My truck has the auto trans & under normal driving it shifts itself @ 2000 rpm -- it only goes higher when I've got my foot to the floor. Point being that best fuel mileage is obtained when running the engine @ peak torque & yours comes in @ 1700 rpm, so there's no sense cruising down the road @ any higher rpm. And mine will shift into overdrive @ 35 mph if I'm easy on the throttle, so going 45 mph down the road I live on the engine's only turning about 1200 rpm -- but it has plenty of torque to do that. And so does yours.

Default welcome to the Z. For hauling or towing heavy loads...

Welcome to the Z - great people and info here.

If you haul or tow heavy loads with your RAM. please check out TotalLoadControl™ air suspension.

TLC™ is a revolutionary air suspension that we introduced on the Z for 4th Gen 1500 and 2nd & 3rd Gen 2500 & 3500.

TLC uses the largest air springs on any pick-up - 9" Goodyear springs - to level any load you haul or tow. TLC also improves handling, absorbs road shocks and bumps and should save on tire wear (if you do a lot of heavy hauling or towing).

If you have any questions about TLC, please contact or me or our Z rep, ArmyofOne (Josh).

Enjoy the Z!

John
