Default Hi flow cats, 4th gen???

I noticed everyone is doing all kinds of header swaps, different exhaust configurations. The guys with headers are generally unhappy because of tuning issues. Our stock exhaust manifold does look like poo, but it is obviously flowing quite well. So I am trying to think outside the box and go another route without having to mess with tuning.
I have a few questions that some of you hard core guys and mechanics can clear up for me.
1) How restrictive are our factory cats? If our factory cats are fairly restictive, then wouldn't it be worthwhile to go to an aftermarket cat with less restriction? I've seen good brand name cats for 80 bucks or so.
2) Screw the Y-pipe and throw in a X-pipe with true 2.5" pipng and then use two mufflers of your choice. Good idea or bad? X pipe exhaust systems have always shown significant gains, the best way to go for a street ride from past experiience.
3) With this kind of setup, will it throw 02 sensor codes? I know the whole Fort Knox ECU deal Dodge screwed us with. Shouldn't the stock ECU be able to compensate for these kind of changes? The ECU can correct air/fuel ratios for the 02 variations such as major altitude changes. Ok I just gave myself a headache, so I will stop now. Anyone's input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Factory catalytic converters on newer vehicles are not very restrictive, no more than an aftermarket "hi flow" cat. So swapping to aftermarket is pretty much a waste. You could eliminate them for a few hp but then have to deal with emissions(depending on your state), rotten egg smell, but mainly CEL's which it is possible to trick the pcm, but just a lot of PITA for 5 or so hp.

X pipes are great and it would be a great performing setup, but people generally exaggerate the benefits of a good x pipe setup over a good y pipe setup. There's very little difference, just a few peak hp. Personally, I think the extra cost and labor is not worth a few hp. I've seen dyno's from 4.6L mustang guys that have done x pipes vs y pipes (sized appropriately and same type of mufflers) and only gained less than 5 hp with the x pipe. That could even be due to error in the dyno, so if the y pipe is done well it will be just as good basically, and significantly cheaper.

The only modifications that will throw CEL's is manifold and cat mods. Anything you do past the cats doesn't effect anything with CEL's.

why would a 4.6 mustang that comes with a factory h-pipe dual exhaust switch to a y-pipe? seems like he'd be going backwards since there is already 2 cats and 2 mufflers with an h-pipe between them.

You can do a y pipe to a single in/out muffler to another y pipe(or single in/dual out muffler). Still gives duals. Really it's almost the same as an x pipe if you think about it, just stretched out.

X pipe or H pipe is definitely the most common on mustangs though.

EDIT: You know now that you posted that question and I answered, it really doesn't make sense. I never have looked at a mustang up close under neath but I assume the h pipe crosses under the transmission somewhere, there'd be no room under there for a y pipe + muffler + another y pipe...

The dynos were on a forum some guy on it did the comparison. This was from at least 5 years ago though, maybe longer. I should have saved all the info.

Thanks for the thorough reply. That makes sense because our 5.7's would not pull like a raped ape above 3 grand with a restrictive exhaust. Mine does anyways.. I'd just like to get a broader power range. But for the cost and tuning headaches, it's not worth it imo.

^^ Me like. I have read all the hype on your exhaust. I have been waiting for a pic. Thanks a mill. That's a single 3" outlet out of the muffler turned down by the axle correct?

Stupid firewalls at work won't let me on youtube or any other vid. hosting sites! I need a crowbar to pry my wife and son off the two computers at my house. I'll listen to the clip later on, I bet the cutouts are nasty.
Only problem with your setup is my rear bumper is made for duals... decisions.. Maybe I should go to Autozone and buy two of the ugliest loudest fart cans with 8" tips for the honda civics punks, Then just hang them there under my bumper for looks..
