It shouldn't matter unless the inside tube is louvered -- the one I have is just perforated steel. If the core is louvered, install so the open side of the louvers faces away from the engine.

Why do a glass pack? Forget the muffler, and put pipe in it place.
But leave the stock Cat. You will never find a better sound, and so so so much better than a glass pack, and louder.

Louder, yes, but I disagree with "better". I ran my (Cummins diesel) truck which did not come from the factory with a Cat for a little while with only the pipe coming from the turbo (ends under the passenger's seat) & surprisingly, with the glasspack on it's almost as loud.

BUT -- there's a "raspy" sound with no muffler that I find very annoying & at certain rpms there's a "drone" that'll drive you nuts. The glasspack tones all that down & what you hear is a "pleasant" loud -- the raspy sound is gone & so is the drone @ sustained highway speeds -- now the engine sounds like the old nickname,"Hummin' Cummins" & I can still listen to the radio! And while a Cat converter acts like a muffler in some respects, it doesn't get rid of the "obnoxious loud" sounds.

The glasspack I got (same inside diameter as the pipe from the turbo) does not restrict exhaust flow @ all & I've made similar exhaust systems for gasoline engines too (for 40 years), getting the same results -- nice (loud) tone, but not obnoxious.
