Default new guy with 04 Hemi

I've read the 03 models are lousy for using a programmer, and the 05's are great. Here I sit with a bone stock 04 Hemi and looking to start doing some upgrades. I inherited the truck from my father in law. Time for fresh pkugs etc, get rid of the drasted egr fault code, upgrade tires, exhaust etc. Maybe I missed it, but is there a list of first step mods that are most beneficial by model year? Not new to modding cars, just sold a 600 hp Mustang I built, and dd a modded supercharged AMG benz, but certainly new to the truck scene. This one will be used mostly during the winter and for pulling my camper during the rest of the year.

School me pease!

Do a good tune up first (plugs, fluids, wires if needed, EGR apparently) so you have it running right. 03's are lousy for custom tuning, but respond well to Superchips canned tunes. So will the 04. Depending in when the 04 was built whether or not you can access the trans tuning. A tuner will be the cheapest upgrade first. Everyone loves CAI's, but really it's more for niose thna anything lol. Good exhaust front to back does help. That's pretty much where the cheap upgrades end. Then you get into cam, heads, gears, converter, custom tuning, etc. How deep are your pockets and how far do you want to go down the rabbit hole?

I have to agree totally, put a Hypertech tune on my truck Saturday and only 3 out of the 6 or 7 options were available, and only added 13hp and like 17ftlbs. Not worth 379.00, so I removed the tune and took the Hypertech back and got my money back. I'm going down the rabbit hole now!

I remember when I bought my '04 new the Hypertech was the only tuner available. It was a worthless paper weight.

Shortly after, Superchips came out and man what a difference it made in the truck!

Superchips, Volant cai, magnaflow y pipe, and an aeroturbine muffler woke my '04 up big time.
Still runs great after 250k miles.

agree with above...but I love my cai , another cheap mod is a 180 thermostat (autozone duralast 4128)...also, at some point, swap in a new Y pipe to replace the stock pinched one.

Ok, just scored a used Superchips Flashpaq 3865 from the 'bay for $100. Got the 91 tune loaded and just purchased the 39.00 trans tuning. Found a few trans tunes linked from this site that I will try out.

I just tried to install a 180 t stat but the rubber gasket was messed up and leaking, so will need to pick up a new 203 unit tomorrow just to get the gasket, argh. Going to grab a new egr valve while I'm there, I pulled the old one off and its pretty rusted inside, looks like the piston is seized up due to the rust. Hopefully that takes care of the egr issue.

Was planning to pickup new sparkplugs while I'm at the store, i see alot of threads say to get NGK 5306's, which are LZTR4A-11, but I see other threads that state the stock plugs should be LZTR5A-11? Which is it?

Since I also have a few broken off exhaust manifold bolts, I was thinking I might as well upgrade. Is it worth it to go right to Pacesetter longtubes and matching y pipe to mate up to my otherwise factory exhaust?

thanks for all your help!

I've read that the diablo Intune programmer will give an 03 hemi anywhere from 20-40 RWHP? Is this true and which is it?

The Diablo intune is a nice unit if youre planning on doing mods beyond the typical cai, exhaust. They can utilize a custom tune, but for most needs including mine, the Suprchips canned tunes are great, and the trans tuning is even better!

So do you know what possible hp gains are realistic with an 03 with basic mods, CAI, exhaust. Is the 20-40 RWHP true with the Diablo?
