Default Black oil

I now own my first ever diesel, a 6.7 I6 cummins. I bought it at a dealership, 2 yrs old, 41,000 miles on it. They gave it an oil change. Two days later I check the oil. IT IS BLACK! !
I go back to the dealership, they say that is normal due to the soot of a diesel engine.
Is that true? How does soot get into the oil system?

Thanks in advance for answers...

100% normal for a diesel.

I have an 2004 Cummins, it has nothing to do with the emissions stuff, mine turns the oil black pretty quickly also.

I'd go as far to say it's normal for a gasoline car as well.

Its because of blow by. Junk that makes it past the piston rings during compression/ignition. If your oil level starts to rise, its likely due to a bad injector that is dumping diesel non stop into that cylinder. Black oil on a diesel is normal. If it turns watery and smells like diesel, you may have a problem.

Hopefully not after two days, or you probably have bigger issues.

It's been my experience, especially older cars with EGR that it happens pretty darn fast.

Even when you drain out the old oil there is a ton of remaining oil in the system that you can't get out. Soon as you turn the key your brand new honey colored oil turns a good tinge of carbon.

I wish that these trucks had remote cartridge filters so you could change them out every 5k and the oil every 10k.

Anyone running a relocation system without issues?

The Pentastar V6 uses a cartridge filter. My guess is that if they go to a 4.8L V8 based off the Pentastar in the 5th gen Rams like the rumors suggest, it will likewise use a cartridge filter.
