Default 2008 evo mr

So my buddy recently got his new car. It is an 08 EVO MR with the 291 bhp and 300 lb-ft tq. He is pretty new to the manual transmission but thought he could take me from a roll (can't launch from 1st yet).

We line up, I'm in 2nd gear sitting around 3200 rpm, he is sitting in 4th (I didn't know this at the time), we are rolling at about 60mph. I let him honk it off, and just tear away from him like he was sitting still... I'm thinking he missed a shift. Turns out he thought he could just sit in 4th gear and out run me, I told him to drop it to 3rd (where his turbo is actually spooled and ready to go) and run again. We do so, it was a much closer outcome this time, I still edged him out by about half a car. We let out around 110 or 115.

We did also do a quick run from a roll with both of us in first. We each rolled into wide open throttle, each time he would shift I would gain about half a car. We ran that one up to about 70 mph. Once he learns how to shift a little smoother I think we will be about dead even.

Either way, good times.

The 2008 MR is not what I consider manual. It has the SST transmission. But I don't think you are talking about an MR if you are gaining half a car each time he shifts. So he probably has the GSR trim, manual 5 spd.

Sounds like he needs to be shifting a lot higher in the rpm range. Turbo lag shouldn't be this bad unless he has boost leaks or a fried turbo, courtesy of the previous owner. I hope he bought from a reputable dealer or he won't be learning to drive that car anytime soon, or for cheap.

His is the one in the link I posted. 6speed transmission. 4 door, 291 bhp and 300 tq. I would agree that he needed to shift at higher rpms but don't under estimate my truck either. It's a regular cab short bed, and with my mod's I get along pretty damn well.

I would bet your truck does haul ass! I had an 04 RCSB 2wd with 17's and a 3.55 LSD and while stock that truck really got it on! Unless you drive your buddy drives his EVO like he stole it or his dad has a clutch/transmission repair shop I think with your mods the out come was highly believable.
